How Much Data Does YouTube Use? Full Breakdown by Resolution

By Wanderly TeamJuly 27, 20265 min read

    Short answer

YouTube data use depends almost entirely on video resolution. At 480p you will use roughly 300 MB per hour; at 1080p roughly 1.5 GB per hour; at 4K up to 3 GB per hour. Capping quality is the single most effective way to stream on a travel plan without running out.

    Data per hour by resolution

    ResolutionApproximate data per hour
    144p (lowest)~80–100 MB
    240p~150 MB
    360p~250 MB
    480p (SD)~300–500 MB
    720p (HD)~900 MB–1.2 GB
    1080p (Full HD)~1.5–2 GB
    1440p (2K)~2.5 GB
    2160p (4K)~3–7 GB
Audio only / music in background~50–100 MB

Higher frame rates matter too: 1080p at 60 fps uses roughly 50% more than 1080p at 30 fps.

Why YouTube quietly eats travel plans

The default setting is "Auto", which picks the highest quality your connection can sustain. On a fast 5G travel eSIM, Auto will happily stream 1080p or higher — meaning a single evening of watching can consume several gigabytes.

Cap your quality before you travel

    In the YouTube app:

    1. 1Tap your profile picture > Settings > Video quality preferences.
    2. 2Set Video quality on mobile networks to *Data saver* (or "Higher picture quality" only when you have a large plan).
    3. 3Leave Wi-Fi on Auto.

You can also override per video: tap the three dots > Quality > Advanced > pick 360p or 480p.

    Other settings that help:

    • Turn off Playback in feeds on mobile data — autoplaying previews as you scroll add up fast.
    • Turn off Autoplay next video so a session does not run for hours unattended.
    • Disable background play over cellular unless you specifically want audio-only.

    Download for offline viewing

YouTube Premium allows downloads. Download on hotel Wi-Fi at the quality you want and watch offline with zero mobile data. A 1-hour 480p download is roughly 300–400 MB.

    Other streaming services for comparison

    ServiceApproximate per hour (HD)
    Netflix~3 GB (HD), ~7 GB (4K)
    Spotify (high quality)~150 MB
    Instagram scrolling~600 MB–1 GB
    TikTok~800 MB–1 GB

How much data should I buy?

    Your usageSuggested plan
No streaming — maps, chat, email1 GB per week
Occasional short videos at 480p3 GB per week
An hour of 480p–720p video most evenings10 GB per week
Regular HD streaming or hotspot to a laptop20 GB or unlimited

Set Data saver before you fly and a modest plan goes a long way. Compare data plans for your destination.
