Short answer
YouTube data usage depends mostly on the video quality you watch at. For planning, allow roughly 300–500 MB per hour at 480p, 1.5–2 GB at 1080p, and 3–7 GB at 4K. These are illustrative budgeting ranges, not YouTube limits or measured Wanderly tests; actual use can fall outside them. Start with Data saver, then check your phone's recorded YouTube usage.

These ranges are estimates, not guaranteed data rates. Frame rate, compression, the video itself, buffering and background activity can change the total. A useful conversion is average bitrate in Mbps × 0.45 ≈ GB per hour: a stream averaging 5 Mbps would use about 2.25 GB in an hour, before extra app traffic. Resolution alone does not tell you that bitrate. For a personal estimate, check YouTube's cellular-data counter before and after a viewing session at your chosen quality; include a buffer for the rest of your trip.
Why the same resolution can use different amounts
- Frame rate. A 1080p60 or 4K60 stream (the quality menu shows "60") sends more data than the same resolution at 30 fps, and can go well past the upper end of the ranges above.
- Compression. YouTube delivers video in different formats depending on your device. Newer codecs such as AV1 and VP9 can show the same picture with less data, so two "1080p" streams need not cost the same.
- The video itself. Fast motion and detailed scenes compress less well than a talking head.
Budget YouTube for a trip
Multiply your hourly rate by how long you watch:

At 0.5 GB an hour (roughly 480p to 720p):

It also works in reverse: if you set aside 5 GB for YouTube at 0.5 GB an hour, that is about ten hours of viewing. Keep this separate from the data you need for maps, messaging and everything else.
Why YouTube quietly eats travel plans

Cap your quality before you travel
In the YouTube app:
- 1Tap your profile picture > Settings > Video quality preferences.
- 2Set Video quality on mobile networks to *Data saver* (or "Higher picture quality" only when you have a large plan).
- 3Leave Wi-Fi on Auto.
You can also change an individual video's quality in the player: open Settings > Quality > Advanced and choose a resolution when that option is available. Controls can vary by device and video.
Other settings that help:
- Turn off Playback in feeds on mobile data — autoplaying previews as you scroll add up fast.
- Turn off Autoplay next video so a session does not run for hours unattended.
- Disable background play over cellular unless you specifically want audio-only.
Download for offline viewing
Where YouTube Premium offline viewing is supported, download eligible videos over Wi-Fi before your trip and check that the download has completed. Play the saved copy from Downloads. Downloads may require a later internet connection to check availability, and streaming a different video or other app activity can still use mobile data. Check your actual YouTube data usage
A quick test on your own phone beats any table:
- 1Note the starting figure. iPhone: Settings → Cellular (or Mobile Data), find YouTube. Android: Settings → Network & internet (or Connections) → Data usage → Mobile data usage.
- 2Pick one quality and leave it there for the test.
- 3Watch for 15 minutes on mobile data, as you normally would.
- 4Check the increase and multiply it by four for an hourly rate. For example, 120 MB in 15 minutes is about 480 MB an hour.
