The verdict for Italy
For a single-country Italy trip, our plans start at $1.99 and the best value lands under $0.50 per gigabyte across tiers from 1 GB to 50 GB, with validity out to 180 days. Airalo's Italy packages are competitive and well presented, and the practical experience of using either is similar: scan a QR code and connect on the network your plan lists. Some of our current Italy plans list iliad and WindTre, and a few add Vodafone, so check the plan details if you want a particular network.
The interesting divergence is multi-country. A great many Italy itineraries are actually Europe itineraries — Rome and then Paris, or a Milan-Zurich-Munich run. Airalo's regional bundles are a genuinely strong product for that shape of trip, and if yours looks like that, buying one of theirs is simpler than assembling country plans.
Conversely, if Italy is the whole trip, a dedicated Italy plan is almost always better value than any regional bundle from anyone, ours included. Buy the country, not the continent.

Planning coverage in Italy
Italian urban coverage is excellent and 5G is common in Rome, Milan, Florence and Naples. The honest weak spots are vertical rather than remote: the Amalfi coast road drops signal between headlands, the Dolomites and Gran Sasso lose it in valleys, and some of the hill towns in Umbria and Basilicata are thinner than their popularity suggests. Sardinian and Sicilian interiors are patchier than the coasts.

Planning your data use
Italy is a maps-and-restaurant-research trip. Heavy Maps use in cities that were not designed for grid navigation, museum ticket apps, and steady photo uploads. Train travel means intermittent signal but rarely a real outage.
Check the exact plan's terms for activation, hotspot and top-ups. Do not infer its mobile network or IP location from country coverage.

Italy vs Airalo — common questions
Will my eSIM work on the Amalfi coast?
Mostly, with caveats that apply equally to any provider. The SS163 drops signal between headlands and in the tunnels, and some of the cliffside properties in Positano are in genuine shadow. Coverage in the towns themselves is fine. Download your maps before the drive.
Is Wanderly cheaper than Airalo for Italy?

Does an Italy plan cover the rest of the EU?
Not on a single-country plan from either of us — that is a common and expensive misunderstanding. An Italy plan covers Italy. If you are crossing into France, Switzerland or Austria you need a regional plan, and Airalo's are worth looking at for that.
What about the Dolomites and mountain valleys?
Town and resort coverage is good; valley floors and the higher trails are not. This is topography, not carrier choice, and no provider can sell you around it. Offline maps are the answer.
Do I get an Italian number?
Ours can include one; Airalo's Italy packages cannot. Our Italy Calls & texts plans come with a number for calling and SMS, assigned once you buy — though not necessarily an Italian number. Restaurant bookings and some museum ticketing occasionally want a local one, so keep your home SIM reachable for SMS rather than relying on it.
