Albania is one of Europe's fastest-growing destinations — the Riviera around Ksamil and Himarë, Tirana, Berat and the Accursed Mountains. It is also outside the European Union, which surprises many travellers: EU phone plans do not automatically roam there at home rates, so a travel eSIM is often the cheapest way to get data even for EU visitors.
Short answer: buy an Albania plan (or a bundle that explicitly lists Albania) before you fly. Do not assume your EU or UK plan covers Albania.
What an Albania eSIM costs
At the time of writing (October 2026), Wanderly's Albania plans start at $2.99 for 1GB, and 10GB costs around $8. The median across data-only Albania plans is about $0.80 per GB — well under the $1.43 median across 187 countries in the Wanderly eSIM Price Index.
Several of the cheapest per-GB bundles last only three days. For a week or more on the Riviera, choose validity covering your whole trip.
Albania is not in EU roaming
EU roaming rules — roam like at home — apply in EU and EEA countries. Albania is neither. Some EU operators include Albania in their plans or offer reduced rates, but many charge standard non-EU roaming. UK, US and Canadian plans usually charge too. Check your carrier's list before relying on it, or use an eSIM.
The same applies on day trips: Corfu to Saranda takes you from the EU (Greece) into Albania, and phones near the coast can switch networks in both directions. See the best eSIM for Greece.
Coverage where you will actually be
- Tirana: strong 4G.
- Albanian Riviera (Saranda, Ksamil, Dhërmi, Himarë): good in towns and at the main beaches.
- Berat and Gjirokastër: good coverage.
- Llogara Pass: coverage on most of the road.
- Theth and Valbona (Accursed Mountains): limited in the villages and largely absent on the Valbona–Theth hike. Plan for offline days.
- Lake Ohrid shore (Pogradec): good; near the lake, phones may join North Macedonian networks.
How much data you need
| Trip | Suggested data |
|---|---|
| Riviera long weekend | 1–3 GB |
| One week, Tirana + Riviera | 5 GB |
| Two weeks incl. the north | 10 GB |
| Remote work | 20 GB |

Albania on a Balkans trip
Combining Albania with Montenegro, Kosovo, North Macedonia or Croatia? Each is a separate coverage area, and only Croatia is in the EU. See the best eSIM for Croatia and check every country on a regional bundle's list.
Setting it up
- 1Confirm your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked on our compatibility checker.
- 2Install the eSIM over WiFi before you fly — iPhone or Android steps.
- 3On arrival, select the eSIM for mobile data and turn on data roaming for that line.
- 4Turn data roaming off on your home line.
