Colombia is one of the easiest countries in South America to stay connected in — if you skip the local SIM counter. Bogotá, Medellín, Cartagena and the coffee region all have solid 4G, and 5G is expanding in the big cities. The friction is not coverage, it is buying and registering a Colombian SIM as a visitor. A travel eSIM avoids that entirely.

Short answer: a prepaid eSIM installed before you fly is the simplest option for most trips under a month. For a long stay, a local SIM can be cheaper — this guide covers both.

Why an eSIM beats a local SIM for most visitors

Buying a local SIM in Colombia is possible, but it comes with steps a tourist rarely wants on arrival:

  • Passport registration at a carrier store or authorised seller.
  • Device (IMEI) registration. Colombia has historically required foreign phones used with a Colombian SIM to be registered, and unregistered handsets can be blocked from the local network after a period. Rules and enforcement change, so check the regulator's current guidance if you plan to buy a local SIM.
  • Queues and opening hours — airport kiosks are not always open on a late arrival.

A foreign-issued travel eSIM roams onto Colombian networks, so you install it at home, switch it on when you land at El Dorado or José María Córdova, and you are online before passport control.

What a Colombia eSIM costs

At the time of writing (October 2026), Wanderly's Colombia plans start at $3.99 for 1GB, with 5GB around $8. The largest bundles fall to roughly $1 per GB, and the median across all data-only Colombia plans is about $1.30 per GB — just under the $1.43 median across 187 countries in the Wanderly eSIM Price Index.

Read the validity before you choose. Several of the cheapest per-GB Colombia bundles last only three to five days, which suits a short city break but not a two-week route. For longer trips, pick a plan whose validity covers your full dates even if the per-GB price is slightly higher. If you are comparing Colombia with other providers' pricing, our Colombia vs Airalo page lays out the economics side by side.

The networks: Claro, Movistar and Tigo

Colombia's main networks are Claro (the largest, with the broadest rural reach), Movistar and Tigo, plus newer entrants. Travel eSIMs connect to a partner network automatically.

  • Bogotá and Medellín: strong 4G and growing 5G across the centre, El Poblado, Laureles and the airports.
  • Cartagena and the Caribbean coast: good in the walled city, Getsemaní and Bocagrande. Signal on the Rosario Islands and Barú is patchier.
  • Coffee region (Salento, Filandia, Manizales): reliable in towns; weaker in the Cocora Valley and on rural fincas.
  • Tayrona and La Guajira: expect long gaps inside the national park and in the desert north. Download offline maps first.

How much data you need in Colombia

TripSuggested data
Long weekend in Cartagena or Medellín1–3 GB
One week, two cities5 GB
Two weeks, coffee region and coast10 GB
Remote work or hotspotting20 GB+

Ride-hailing apps, maps, WhatsApp (Colombia runs on WhatsApp — restaurants, tours and hosts all use it) and translation are light. Video calls and photo backups are what burn data. See how much data you need for travel.

Colombia on a longer South America trip

If Colombia is one stop on a longer route through Peru, Ecuador or Brazil, compare a regional plan against country plans. The best eSIM for South America guide explains how to check every country on a bundle's list. Continuing south to Machu Picchu? See the best eSIM for Peru.

Setting it up

  1. 1Check your phone is eSIM-compatible and carrier-unlocked on our compatibility checker.
  2. 2Buy the plan and install it over WiFi before you fly — steps for iPhone and Android.
  3. 3When you land, set the eSIM as your mobile-data line and turn on data roaming for that line.
  4. 4Keep your home SIM on for calls and texts, with its own data roaming switched off.

FAQ

Do I need to register my phone to use an eSIM in Colombia? A foreign travel eSIM roams onto Colombian networks, so it does not go through the local SIM registration process. IMEI registration rules apply to Colombian SIMs used in foreign phones.

How much does an eSIM for Colombia cost? Wanderly Colombia plans start at $3.99 for 1GB. The median across data-only plans is about $1.30 per GB, with larger bundles closer to $1 per GB.

Does an eSIM work in Cartagena and Medellín? Yes. Both cities have strong 4G and growing 5G coverage. Coverage weakens on the islands off Cartagena and in rural areas.

Is there signal in Tayrona National Park? Only in places. Expect long stretches with no coverage inside the park, so download maps and booking confirmations beforehand.

Can I use WhatsApp with a Colombia eSIM? Yes. WhatsApp runs over mobile data and keeps your existing WhatsApp number, even though the eSIM line is data-only.

eSIM or local SIM for a month in Colombia? For stays of a month or more, a local SIM can be cheaper per gigabyte, but it requires passport and device registration. For shorter trips, an eSIM is simpler.
