Short answer
Yes, WhatsApp uses data for everything: messages, voice calls, video calls, photos, voice notes and status updates. It never uses your carrier's minutes or SMS allowance. The good news is that text messaging is almost free in data terms — you would need tens of thousands of messages to burn through 1 GB.

The number that surprises people is video calling. A single one-hour video call home can eat a third of a 1 GB travel plan.
Why your WhatsApp data use is higher than expected
The most common cause is auto-download of media. By default WhatsApp downloads every photo, video and voice note sent to you — including in busy group chats — the moment it arrives. On a metered travel plan that is the single biggest drain.
Turn it off before you fly:
- 1Open WhatsApp > Settings > Storage and data.
- 2Under Media auto-download, set Photos, Audio, Videos and Documents to No media for Mobile data.
- 3Leave Wi-Fi auto-download on if you want.
- 4In the same screen, enable Use less data for calls.
That one change typically cuts WhatsApp's mobile data use by 60–80% for heavy group-chat users.
Backups are the other hidden drain
WhatsApp chat backups to iCloud or Google Drive can be several gigabytes. If a backup runs over mobile data while you are abroad, it can wipe out an entire travel plan in minutes. In Settings > Chats > Chat backup, set backups to Wi-Fi only and turn off "Include videos".
Does WhatsApp work in China?
Not on a normal Chinese network. WhatsApp is blocked by the Great Firewall, along with Facebook, Instagram, Google services, YouTube and Gmail. Messages will appear stuck on a single grey tick.
There are two practical workarounds:
- A travel eSIM that routes traffic outside mainland China. Many international travel eSIMs for China break out through Hong Kong or Singapore, so your traffic is not subject to local filtering and WhatsApp works normally. This is the simplest option and requires no extra software.
- A VPN installed before you arrive. VPN provider websites and app stores are also filtered inside China, so you must install and log in before you land. VPN reliability inside China fluctuates.
Roaming on a foreign SIM often works too, for the same reason as the first option — your data is tunnelled back to the home network. If staying reachable on WhatsApp matters, do not plan on buying a local Chinese SIM at the airport.

- Use voice notes instead of video calls — 40x cheaper in data.
- Send photos as "standard quality" rather than HD.
- Mute large groups so media does not queue up.
- Download media selectively by tapping the individual arrow rather than auto-downloading.
