Short answer
Yes, FaceTime uses data. It is an internet-based calling service, so when you are not on Wi-Fi every FaceTime call runs over your cellular data allowance. It never uses call minutes or SMS.
A FaceTime video call uses roughly 200–400 MB per hour. A FaceTime audio call uses roughly 20–40 MB per hour — about ten times less.
How much data does FaceTime take?
| Call type | Approximate data |
|---|---|
| FaceTime Audio | ~0.3–0.6 MB per minute (~20–40 MB/hour) |
| FaceTime Video (standard) | ~3–5 MB per minute (~200–300 MB/hour) |
| FaceTime Video (HD, good connection) | ~6–8 MB per minute (~350–500 MB/hour) |
| Group FaceTime (several participants) | ~8–15 MB per minute |
| SharePlay / screen sharing | Similar to video, plus the shared content |
FaceTime adapts its quality to your connection. On a fast 5G travel eSIM it will use the higher end of these ranges; on a weak signal it drops resolution and uses less.
Does FaceTime work abroad?
Yes. FaceTime works anywhere you have a working internet connection — Wi-Fi, home cellular data, or a travel eSIM. Because it runs over data rather than the phone network, there are no international calling charges. It is one of the cheapest ways to talk to family while travelling, provided you have data.
Two caveats:
- The UAE has historically restricted FaceTime and other VoIP services on local networks. A travel eSIM that routes traffic internationally often avoids this; a local SIM usually does not.
- FaceTime is unavailable on devices sold in mainland China in some configurations, and Apple's relay servers can be slow behind the Great Firewall.
How to reduce FaceTime data use
- 1Use FaceTime Audio instead of video when you do not need to see each other — it is roughly 10x cheaper.
- 2Turn on Low Data Mode: Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options > Low Data Mode. This reduces FaceTime video quality and pauses background syncing.
- 3Call from Wi-Fi in hotels and cafés for long catch-ups, saving your travel data for when you are out.
- 4Avoid Group FaceTime on cellular — each additional participant adds a stream.
- 5Keep calls short on video, long on audio.
Can I stop FaceTime using cellular data entirely?
Yes. Go to Settings > Cellular, scroll to the app list and switch FaceTime off. It will then only work on Wi-Fi. This is a good safety net if you are on a tight plan and worried about an accidental long video call.
How much data should I buy?
| Your usage | Suggested plan |
|---|---|
| Audio calls and messaging only | 1 GB per week |
| A short daily video call plus maps | 3 GB per week |
| 30–60 minutes of video calling per day | 5–10 GB per week |
| Long daily video calls plus streaming | 10–20 GB or unlimited |
A travel eSIM keeps FaceTime working the moment you land, with your home number still active for texts. Find a plan for your destination.
