Why UK coverage does not automatically include Ireland
The UK consists of England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. The Republic of Ireland is not part of the UK.
Travelers can cross the land border without a routine passport checkpoint, but mobile networks still treat the areas as different countries. Your phone may switch networks while traveling between Belfast, Derry, Dublin, and the west coast.
That switch is straightforward when the eSIM includes both countries. If it does not, data may stop after crossing.
The three plan types
UK-only eSIM
A UK plan suits a trip limited to England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. Check the product's coverage list rather than relying only on the title.
Ireland-only eSIM
An Ireland plan is designed for the Republic of Ireland. It may not cover Northern Ireland because Northern Ireland uses UK networks. Dublin, Galway, Cork, and Killarney can fit an Ireland-only plan; adding Belfast or the Causeway Coast means checking UK coverage too.
Europe regional eSIM
A regional plan is often easiest for a combined itinerary. The same eSIM can remain active while you cross between the UK and Ireland, and it may also cover a connection through another European country.
Coverage still varies by product. Providers decide which countries and networks belong to each plan.

One regional plan is usually more convenient:

How much data do you need?
Navigation, messaging, email, bookings, and light browsing use relatively little data. Video streaming, cloud photo uploads, hotspot use, and video calls use much more.
Estimate by activity:
- Light: maps, messages, email, bookings
- Medium: social media, music, frequent browsing
- Heavy: video, hotspot, video calls, cloud backup

Will the eSIM switch networks at the border?
Usually. With coverage in both countries, the phone should register on a supported partner after crossing.
If data does not return:

- 4Check data roaming is enabled on the travel line if instructed.

Does data roaming need to be on?

- home SIM for calls and texts
- travel eSIM for mobile data
- roaming off on the home SIM
- roaming on for the travel eSIM when instructed

What about calls and texts?
Many travel eSIMs are data-only and do not include a phone number. Ours come both ways: most plans are data-only, and our Calls & texts plans add ordinary calling and SMS on a number assigned after purchase — though not necessarily a local one. You can still use WhatsApp, FaceTime, Signal, Telegram, and other internet calling apps.
You may also keep the home SIM active for incoming calls and verification texts. Traditional calls can trigger home-carrier roaming charges, so check those terms before travel.
Cities, countryside, and ferries
Performance depends on the local partner network and terrain. Major cities generally have broad coverage, while rural roads, coastlines, mountains, and old buildings can be less consistent. No eSIM can create signal where its partner has none.
On ferries between Great Britain and Ireland, terrestrial signal may fade offshore. Ship Wi-Fi may be the practical option. Avoid maritime cellular networks unless you understand the charges; they may not be included in an ordinary travel plan.
