🇧🇷 About eSIMs in Brazil
A Brazil eSIM gets you mobile data as soon as you land in Rio or São Paulo, so you can book a ride, pull up maps and message your hotel without looking for a SIM counter. Some current Brazil plans list Claro, or TIM and Vivo, as the local network, and others do not publish a carrier. The network, the hotspot rule and the moment validity starts are all in each plan's details, so read them before you buy.
Iguaçu Falls is the one stop where the border matters. The falls lie on the Iguaçu River between Brazil's Iguaçu National Park in Paraná and Argentina's Iguazú National Park in Misiones, and Foz do Iguaçu sits on the triple border with Argentina and Paraguay. A Brazil-only plan covers the Brazilian side but not the Argentine side, so if you plan to cross, pick a plan that includes Argentina or add a separate Argentina plan.
Outside the cities, expect signal to thin out. Anatel, Brazil's telecom regulator, requires operators to cover at least 80% of the urban area of each municipality's main town, not the countryside around it. For river lodges beyond Manaus or ranches in the Pantanal, plan for little or no signal: download offline maps and booking confirmations before you leave town, and check the coverage maps that Claro, TIM and Vivo publish.
In the cities, theft is the bigger worry. The UK Foreign Office says thieves target mobile phones, especially between 4pm and 9pm, and advises against using your phone in the street or on trains and the metro. Large celebrations such as Carnival attract pickpockets, so if you are in Rio, Salvador or another Northeast city for the festivities, keep your phone zipped away. Book rides through the official app and check that the plate and driver match. To compare options, see our guide to the best eSIM for Brazil in 2026.
How to activate your eSIM in Brazil
- 1Check your phone and the plan's start ruleMake sure your phone is carrier-unlocked and supports eSIM. Then open the plan details and check the selected plan's start rule: most current Brazil plans start validity on first use, while a few start as soon as you install the eSIM.
- 2Time the installationMost current Brazil plans start on first network connection. If your plan starts on its first network connection and allows installation before travel, install it over reliable Wi-Fi before you fly; if it starts at installation, install it when you need it. Home Wi-Fi is less likely to interrupt the download than airport Wi-Fi.
- 3Switch your data line when you landAfter landing in Rio, São Paulo or wherever you arrive, set the Wanderly eSIM as your cellular data line and follow the plan's instructions on data roaming for that line. You can keep your home SIM on for calls and texts if you still need them.
- 4Prepare before Iguaçu, the Amazon or the PantanalCheck the plan for hotspot use and which network it lists. Download offline maps and tickets while you still have signal in Foz do Iguaçu, Manaus or your Pantanal gateway town. If you will visit the Argentine side of the falls, confirm the plan includes Argentina or add one.
Brazil eSIM FAQ
Will a Brazil eSIM work on the Argentine side of Iguaçu Falls?
Not if it is a Brazil-only plan. The falls are shared between Brazil's Iguaçu National Park in Paraná and Argentina's Iguazú National Park in Misiones, and a Brazil-only plan covers just the Brazilian side. For a day trip across the border, choose a plan that includes Argentina or add a separate Argentina plan before you go.
Which mobile network will my Brazil eSIM use?
It depends on the plan. Some current Brazil plans list Claro, and others list TIM and Vivo; some plans do not publish a carrier at all. The plan details show the network where one is named, so check them before buying if you care which operator you connect through.
Will I have signal in the Amazon or the Pantanal?
Often not outside towns. Anatel only requires operators to cover at least 80% of the urban area of each municipality's main town, so river lodges and remote ranches may have little or no signal. Download offline maps and confirmations in Manaus or your gateway town, and check the operators' published coverage maps for the places you will stay.
Does a data-only Brazil eSIM give me a Brazilian phone number?
No. Data-only plans include mobile data but no Brazilian number, so you cannot receive regular calls or SMS on the eSIM. Messaging and calling apps work over the data connection. If you rely on SMS codes from your bank at home, keep your home SIM active alongside the eSIM.
When does my Brazil plan's validity start?
Check the selected plan's start rule in its details. Most current Brazil plans start validity on first use, and a few start when you install the eSIM. For a first-connection plan that allows installation before travel, you can set it up at home and the clock starts when it first connects in Brazil.
