🇪🇬 About eSIMs in Egypt
Egypt's networks are strong where tourists go. Current Egypt plans list Vodafone, Orange or Etisalat in different combinations, and the plan details show which ones apply. Expect 4G in Cairo, Giza, Alexandria, Luxor, Aswan, Hurghada and Sharm el-Sheikh, plus coverage along the Nile corridor and the Red Sea resorts.
An eSIM also avoids the local SIM process, which requires passport registration and a shop visit — inconvenient after a long flight into Cairo. Installing before you fly means you can arrange your airport transfer immediately, which is genuinely useful given how persistent arrivals-hall touts can be.
Desert and Nile cruise segments are the weak spots: the Western Desert oases, parts of Sinai's interior and mid-river cruise stretches lose signal. For a 10-day trip with maps, WhatsApp and photos, 5–10 GB works well. Installation is a quick QR scan.
How to activate your eSIM in Egypt
- 1Time the installationCheck the selected plan's start rule. If it starts on its first network connection and allows installation before travel, install it over reliable Wi-Fi before you fly; if it starts at installation, install it when you need it. You skip the passport registration needed for local physical SIMs.
- 2Install the eSIMiPhone: Settings → Cellular → Add eSIM → Scan QR. Android: Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → Add eSIM.
- 3Land and switch dataAt Cairo (CAI), Hurghada or Sharm, cycle airplane mode, set the Egypt eSIM as your data line and turn on Data Roaming for it.
- 4Arrange your transfer onlineWorking data on arrival lets you confirm your driver or book a ride app instead of negotiating in the arrivals hall.
Egypt eSIM FAQ
Which networks does it use?
It depends on the plan. Current Egypt plans list Vodafone, Orange or Etisalat in different combinations. The plan details show the network where one is named, so check them before you buy if it matters to you.
Do I need to register my passport?
No. Registration applies to local physical SIM cards. You install a travel eSIM yourself by QR code, with no shop visit or paperwork.
Will it work on a Nile cruise?
Mostly near towns and docks. Mid-river stretches between Luxor and Aswan can drop out on any carrier.
Does it work in the Western Desert or Sinai interior?
Coverage is limited outside towns. Download offline maps before desert excursions.
How much data for 10 days?
5–10 GB covers maps, WhatsApp, ride apps and daily photo uploads.
