🇮🇶 About eSIMs in Iraq
An Iraq eSIM gives you mobile data from the moment you land in Baghdad, Basra, Erbil or Sulaymaniyah, without hunting for a SIM counter. Current Iraq plans are data-only, run on 3G/4G, and start validity on first network connection. They range from daily-allowance plans to fixed bundles of up to 30 days. They do not publish which local network they use; Iraq's mobile operators include Asiacell, Zain Iraq and Korek. If you need a specific network, ask support before buying.
Iraq works as two systems for visitors, and it is worth knowing which one you are entering. The UK Foreign Office says you can no longer get a visit visa on arrival in federal Iraq and must apply for an e-visa in advance, while the Kurdistan Region has its own e-visa and visa on arrival, valid only for travel in the Kurdistan Region. A Wanderly Iraq plan covers Iraq as one country, but no plan can promise signal everywhere. If your trip continues to the Gulf, our Gulf Region and Middle East (5 areas) bundles include Iraq; our other Middle East bundles do not, so check the country list.
Plan around exam-day shutdowns. In 2026 the Internet Society's Pulse tracker recorded government-ordered internet shutdowns across Iraq on school exam mornings, from late May into the summer and again from late August, with the second round of exams running until 12 September. Each lasted about 50 to 90 minutes, starting around 6am local time. During those windows, do not count on mobile data from any provider: download boarding passes, maps and documents the night before.
Check the safety picture before you go. The Foreign Office advises against all travel to some provinces and against all but essential travel to the rest of Iraq, including the Kurdistan Region. It says carrying photo ID is a legal requirement and that the authorities may check it at checkpoints in cities and on main roads. Business travelers, including those in the oil sector, which the Foreign Office lists among potential kidnap targets, should follow their employer's security plan. For regional options, see our guide to the best eSIM for the Middle East.
How to activate your eSIM in Iraq
- 1Check your phone and the planMake sure your phone is carrier-unlocked and supports eSIM. Current Iraq plans are data-only, run on 3G/4G and start validity on first network connection. If your trip also covers the Gulf, compare the bundles that list Iraq in their country list.
- 2Install before you flyBecause current Iraq plans start on first network connection, you can install the eSIM over reliable Wi-Fi at home and the clock starts when it connects in Iraq. Save the installation details offline in case you need to reinstall.
- 3Switch your data line when you landAt Baghdad, Basra, Erbil or Sulaymaniyah, set the Wanderly eSIM as your cellular data line and turn on data roaming for that line. Keep your home SIM on for calls and texts, and check your carrier's Iraq roaming rates before letting it use data.
- 4Keep offline copiesSave your visa, insurance, hotel details and embassy contacts offline, and carry your passport for checkpoints. Exam-season shutdowns can cut internet access for over an hour in the early morning, so download what you need the night before.
Iraq eSIM FAQ
Does an Iraq eSIM work in Erbil and the Kurdistan Region?
Wanderly's Iraq plans cover Iraq as a single country, which includes the Kurdistan Region, but no plan can promise a signal everywhere. Current Iraq plans do not publish which local network they use, so if you need a specific operator in Erbil, Sulaymaniyah or Duhok, ask support before buying.
Which mobile network will my Iraq eSIM use?
Current Iraq plans do not name a network. Iraq's mobile operators include Asiacell, Zain Iraq and Korek. The plans list 3G/4G service and start validity on first network connection. If you need a particular operator, contact support before you buy.
Will my eSIM work during Iraq's exam internet shutdowns?
Do not count on it. The Internet Society's Pulse tracker recorded government-ordered shutdowns across Iraq on exam mornings in 2026, each lasting about 50 to 90 minutes from around 6am local time. Download what you need the night before, and keep offline copies of tickets and documents.
Is there a plan that covers Iraq and its neighbours?
Some. Our Gulf Region bundle lists Iraq with Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Kuwait, Qatar and Bahrain, and our Middle East (5 areas) bundle lists Iraq with Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar and Israel. Other Middle East bundles do not include Iraq, so check the country list before buying.
Does an Iraq eSIM give me a local phone number?
No. Current Iraq plans are data-only, with no Iraqi number, so use messaging and calling apps over data. Keep your home line active for calls and SMS codes, and check your carrier's roaming rates for them.
