Kenya is a good country to be connected in for an unexpected reason — mobile money made deep rural coverage commercially necessary long before tourism did. But there is a limitation on our Kenya plans specifically that you should know before buying.
The verdict for Kenya
Start with the honest caveat. Our Kenya plans run 3G/4G with no 5G tier. Nairobi has real 5G and we cannot sell it to you here. If headline speed in the capital is what you care about, check whether Airalo's Kenya packages offer a 5G-capable routing, because ours do not.
For what most people actually do in Kenya, it does not matter much. Safari travel is photo-heavy and streaming-light, and 4G through Safaricom reaches surprisingly far into the Maasai Mara. Our Kenya catalogue is 14 plans from $3.99 with best value around $1.90 per gigabyte, tiers to 20 GB.
Kenya is also a market where being able to compare routings matters, because the difference between a plan riding Safaricom and one riding Airtel is a real difference in the conservancies. Safaricom is the one you want for anything outside the cities.

Coverage in Kenya
Better than most first-time visitors expect. Safaricom reaches into large parts of the Maasai Mara, and Nairobi has real 5G. But note the ceiling on our Kenya plans specifically: they run 3G/4G with no 5G tier, so this is not the destination to buy for headline speed. Samburu, the northern circuit and anywhere above the treeline on Mount Kenya are genuinely thin.

How travellers actually use data here
Safari travel is photo-heavy and streaming-light. Long stretches in a vehicle with the phone down, then a burst of uploading in the evening — often over lodge Wi-Fi, which has improved a lot.
Routing: Our Kenya routing breaks out in Israel, which is an odd-looking hop but performs fine for everything except geo-restricted Kenyan services.

Do Wanderly Kenya plans support 5G?
No. Our Kenya catalogue is 3G/4G only, unlike most of our destinations. Nairobi does have 5G on Safaricom, so if that matters to you, check alternatives including Airalo before buying from us. We would rather say this than have you find out on arrival.
Will my eSIM work in the Maasai Mara?
Largely, yes. Safaricom reaches most of the main conservancies and permanent camps. Coverage thins in the western and southern reaches and drops in river valleys. You will move in and out of signal on game drives.
How much data does a safari trip need?
Less than people expect — typically 3 to 5 GB for a week or ten days. You are in a vehicle with the phone down for most of the day, and lodge Wi-Fi has improved considerably for evening uploads.
Is Kenya expensive compared with other destinations?
Relatively, yes. Our best Kenya value is about $1.90 per gigabyte against roughly $0.48 in much of Europe. That is East African wholesale pricing, not a markup choice, and Airalo faces the same underlying costs.
Can I use M-Pesa on a travel eSIM?
Not really. M-Pesa is tied to a Kenyan mobile number and both providers are data-only, so you cannot receive the SMS it depends on. Bring a card.
