🇨🇭 About eSIMs in Switzerland

Switzerland is not in the EU or the EEA, and that matters for your phone. The EU's "roam like at home" rules cover EU countries plus Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, along with Moldova and Ukraine. Switzerland is not on that list, so an EU home SIM may charge roaming in Zurich or Geneva unless your carrier chooses to extend its allowance there. The same goes for Europe-wide eSIM bundles: one covers Switzerland only if Switzerland appears in that plan's country list.

A Switzerland eSIM lets you set up data before you land. Some current Switzerland plans list Sunrise or Swisscom as the network, and the plan details show which one. These plans are data-only, so you get no Swiss phone number. Most start validity on first use and a few at installation, so check the selected plan's start rule. A first-connection plan that allows installation before travel can be set up at home over Wi-Fi before you fly.

Think about your route before you buy. A Zurich–Lucerne–Interlaken loop, the Jungfrau region and Zermatt are all inside Switzerland, but a day trip to Milan, Strasbourg or the Black Forest is not. A Switzerland-only plan stops at the border, and Switzerland's communications regulator notes that phones near the border can switch to a foreign network on their own. If you plan to cross, pick a plan whose country list includes France, Italy or Germany.

On the scenic train routes, SBB's free FreeSurf onboard internet is built around Swiss mobile subscriptions, so plan to use your own data. The SBB Mobile app needs a connection for timetable and ticket data, and purchases must be finished before departure, so buy tickets while you have signal; iPhone users can add them to Apple Wallet. Hikers should save Rega's air-rescue number, 1414. For a side-by-side look at options, see our guide to the best eSIM for Switzerland in 2026.

How to activate your eSIM in Switzerland

  1. 1
Check the country list and start rule
Before buying, confirm Switzerland, plus any neighbor you plan to visit, appears in the plan's country list. Then check the selected plan's start rule: most current plans begin validity on first use, and a few begin at installation.
  2. 2
    Time the installation
If your plan starts on its first network connection and allows installation before travel, install it over reliable Wi-Fi before you fly; if it starts at installation, install it when you need it. Label the line "Switzerland" so you can tell it apart from your home SIM.
  3. 3
Switch data over when you land
At Zurich or Geneva airport, set the eSIM as your mobile data line and turn on data roaming for that eSIM. The plan has no Swiss number, so keep your home line available for calls and texts, and check your carrier's rates for those.
  4. 4
Get ready for trains and trails
Buy and open your SBB tickets while you still have signal, since purchases must be completed before departure. Save Rega's 1414 number and, if you hike, consider the Rega app. Need to share data with a laptop? Check the plan for hotspot support.

Switzerland eSIM FAQ

Does EU roaming work in Switzerland?

Not by law. The EU's "roam like at home" rules cover EU countries plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Moldova and Ukraine. Switzerland is not included, so an EU carrier can charge roaming there. Some operators choose to extend their EU allowance to Switzerland, so check your carrier's terms before you go.

Does a Europe eSIM cover Switzerland?

Only if Switzerland is in that plan's country list. Because Switzerland sits outside the EU's roaming rules, a Europe-wide bundle does not automatically include it. Open the plan details and look for Switzerland by name before you buy, especially if your trip combines Switzerland with France, Italy or Germany.

Will a Switzerland eSIM work on day trips to France, Italy or Germany?

A Switzerland-only plan stops at the border. Switzerland's communications regulator also notes that phones near the border can connect to a foreign network on their own. If a day trip to Milan, Strasbourg or the Black Forest is on your list, choose a plan whose country list includes those countries.

Can I use SBB tickets and FreeSurf with a travel eSIM?

SBB says its app needs online access for timetable and ticket data, and purchases must be finished before departure, so buy tickets while you have signal. iPhone users can save tickets to Apple Wallet. FreeSurf, SBB's free internet on IC and IR trains, works with listed Swiss mobile subscriptions, so plan to use your eSIM data instead.

Do I get a Swiss phone number, and how do I reach Rega?

No. These plans are data-only and include no Swiss number. Rega's number for medical help by air in Switzerland is 1414, a phone call, so keep your home line available for voice. The Rega app sends your location to its operations center, but Rega says the phone needs a SIM card and at least minimal network coverage.
