Use the safest dual-SIM setup
- Leave your primary SIM turned on for calls and texts if your home carrier's roaming terms make that safe.
- Turn Data Roaming off for the primary SIM.
- Turn the Wanderly eSIM on and enable Data Roaming for that line.
- Select Wanderly as the Mobile Data or Cellular Data line.
- Turn Cellular Data Switching or automatic data switching off so the phone cannot fall back to the home SIM.
Calls and SMS can still cost money
Turning data roaming off does not disable voice or SMS roaming. Receiving an SMS is often free, but answering calls, listening to voicemail, or sending messages may trigger your home carrier's roaming charges. Check that carrier's terms before departure.
iMessage, FaceTime, and WhatsApp
- WhatsApp continues using the number already registered in the app and sends messages over Wanderly data.
- iMessage and FaceTime can keep your existing number or Apple ID, but do not accept a prompt to change the number unless you intend to.
- Internet calling works over mobile data where local network rules permit it. Some countries restrict VoIP calling even though messaging still works.
