Wanderly plans with calls, texts and a phone number

Most Wanderly plans are data-only, and for a lot of travellers that is all they need. But we also sell Calls & texts plans: an eSIM that carries data and comes with its own phone number, so you can make and take ordinary calls without your home carrier's roaming charges.

They are available for 172 countries plus a small number of regional and global plans, and they sit on the "Calls & texts" tab of a destination's page, next to "Standard data".

    What is included

    • A phone number on the eSIM, so people can call you and you can call out.
    • Calling in both directions on every one of these plans — incoming and outgoing.
    • Texting on nearly all of them, usually both ways. A few include SMS you can only receive, and a small number include no SMS at all; the tab states which before you buy.
    • Data, in the same plan. The page lists the data allowance and the number of days next to each option.
    • Allowances vary by plan: some are unlimited minutes and unlimited SMS, others a set number of minutes and messages.

    How to buy one

    1. Open your destination's page on getwanderly.com.
    2. Choose the "Calls & texts" tab. If it is not there, that destination has no calling plans yet — only data.
    3. Pick how many days you need, then how much data. The calling and texting allowance is shown above each group of options.
    4. Check the calling and texting coverage shown for the plan you picked, then continue to checkout.

    Your phone number

The number is assigned after you buy, not before, so we cannot tell you in advance what it will be. Once the eSIM is issued you will find it in your Wanderly dashboard under "Calls and SMS setup" on that eSIM, and in the delivery email.

The assigned number may be from a different country than the one you are travelling to. If you specifically need a local number of the destination — for a delivery driver, a local bank or a sign-up that rejects foreign numbers — we cannot guarantee one, so plan around that.

    • To call or text, select the Wanderly eSIM as the line you are using, then dial + followed by the country code and the number.
    • Give people your Wanderly number in full international format, starting with +.
    • Your own number keeps working as usual on your home SIM if you leave it active.

Things worth knowing before you buy

    • Calls & texts plans cannot be topped up. When the plan runs out, you buy another one.
    • Your phone cannot show how many minutes or messages you have left. Where the eSIM comes with balance instructions we show them with the plan; if it does not, contact support.
    • When validity starts depends on the plan — on installation, at the first network connection, or when the eSIM is generated after purchase. Each plan says which, so install when you are ready to use it.
    • A few of these plans must be installed once you are at your destination rather than before you fly. That is stated on the plan.
    • Calling and texting coverage is not the same thing as which numbers you can dial. Read the calling and texting coverage shown on the plan.

If your destination has no calling plan

Plenty of destinations are still data-only, and a data plan handles most calling needs through the apps you already use: WhatsApp, FaceTime, Telegram and Signal all work over the eSIM's data, and keep your existing number.

The other option is to keep your home SIM switched on for calls and texts while the Wanderly eSIM carries data. That setup is in our guide on keeping calls and texts while using a travel eSIM.

    Frequently asked questions

Do Wanderly eSIMs come with a phone number?

Our Calls & texts plans do. Data-only plans do not. Look for the "Calls & texts" tab on your destination's page to see whether those plans exist for where you are going.

Can I get a local number for the country I am visiting?

Calls & texts plans come with a number, but it may be issued in a different country than your destination, so we cannot promise a local one. If a local number is essential, buy a local SIM at your destination alongside the eSIM.

When do I find out my number?

After purchase. It appears with the eSIM in your Wanderly dashboard under "Calls and SMS setup", and in the delivery email.

Can I receive SMS verification codes on a Calls & texts plan?

If the plan includes incoming SMS, yes — but codes are sent to whichever number you registered with that service, which is usually your home number, not the new one.

Can I add calls to a data plan I already bought?

No. Calling and texting are part of the plan you buy, and these plans cannot be topped up or upgraded. Buy a Calls & texts plan for your next trip, or install one alongside your data plan.

    How much do they cost?

It depends on the destination, the data allowance and how long the plan lasts. The "Calls & texts" tab on the destination page shows the price of every option, and the per-GB rate alongside it.
