Ecuador packs the Andes, the Amazon, the Pacific coast and the Galápagos into one small country, and coverage varies just as much. It is also one of the more expensive countries for mobile data, so the most useful advice is about sizing the plan sensibly.

Short answer: for a short trip, a modest travel eSIM installed before you fly is the easiest option. For a long stay, a local SIM is usually cheaper. In the Galápagos, expect limited and slow data outside the main towns.

Ecuador data is above-average in price

At the time of writing (October 2026), Wanderly's Ecuador plans start at $4.99 for 1GB, with 5GB for 30 days around $14 and 10GB for 30 days around $23. The median across data-only Ecuador plans is about $2.50 per GB — well above the $1.43 median across 187 countries in the Wanderly eSIM Price Index.

That makes two things matter:

  1. 1Do not overbuy. Use hotel and café WiFi for video calls and backups; keep the eSIM for maps, messaging and ride-hailing.
  2. 2Consider a local SIM for long stays. For a month or more, a Claro or Movistar SIM bought locally with your passport is usually cheaper per gigabyte.

The upside: Ecuador's longer plans carry 30-day validity, so you are not forced into short bundles.

Networks and coverage

Ecuador's networks are Claro, Movistar and CNT. Travel eSIMs connect to a partner network automatically.

  • Quito and Guayaquil: strong 4G.
  • Baños, Cuenca, Otavalo: good in towns.
  • Cotopaxi and Quilotoa: coverage near towns and some viewpoints; patchy on the trails.
  • Amazon lodges: little or none in the forest; lodges usually offer WiFi.
  • Galápagos: coverage in Puerto Ayora, Puerto Baquerizo Moreno and Puerto Villamil, often slow; none on most visitor sites and at sea. Liveaboard cruises are effectively offline.
