Guatemala's tourist trail — Antigua, Lake Atitlán, Tikal and Flores — has reasonable coverage, but travel eSIM data there is expensive and local SIMs are cheap and easy to buy. The right choice depends mostly on how long you are staying.

Short answer: a small eSIM installed before you fly gets you through the airport and the first few days with maps and WhatsApp working. For longer trips or heavy data use, a local Tigo or Claro SIM is usually far cheaper.

What a Guatemala eSIM costs

At the time of writing (October 2026), Wanderly's Guatemala plans start at $3.99 for 1GB (7 days). The median across data-only Guatemala plans is about $2.62 per GB — well above the $1.43 median across 187 countries in the Wanderly eSIM Price Index. The larger bundles are also mostly short-validity.

That is why we recommend a small eSIM for arrival rather than a big one for the whole trip.

eSIM vs a local SIM in Guatemala

  • Travel eSIM: online the moment you land in Guatemala City, no queue, nothing to register. Best for the first days or for a short trip.
  • Local SIM (Tigo, Claro): inexpensive and widely sold in Guatemala City and Antigua; bring your passport. Best for longer stays and heavy use.

Tigo and Claro are the two main networks, and both cover the main tourist routes.

Coverage where you will actually be

  • Guatemala City and Antigua: good 4G.
  • Lake Atitlán (Panajachel, San Pedro, San Marcos): generally good in the villages; weaker on lake crossings and hiking trails.
  • Flores: good in town.
  • Tikal: limited inside the park. Download maps and your entry ticket.
  • Semuc Champey: very limited.
  • Acatenango overnight hike: patchy at best.
