Panama City is well connected, and so are Boquete and the main Bocas del Toro islands. The San Blas (Guna Yala) islands mostly are not. Panama is also one of the most expensive countries for travel eSIM data, so the best advice is about buying the right amount — or using a local SIM for long stays.

Short answer: a small eSIM installed before you fly covers arrival and a short trip. Stays of several weeks are usually cheaper on a local SIM. Treat a San Blas trip as an offline trip.

What a Panama eSIM costs

At the time of writing (October 2026), Wanderly's Panama plans start at $6.99 for 1GB (7 days), with 5GB for 30 days around $18 and 10GB for 30 days around $27. The median across data-only Panama plans is about $3.13 per GB — more than double the $1.43 median across 187 countries in the Wanderly eSIM Price Index. Most countries are cheaper.

The upside is that larger plans come with 30-day validity. The downside is that every extra gigabyte costs real money, so use WiFi for video calls and backups.

eSIM vs a local SIM in Panama

  • Travel eSIM: online on landing at Tocumen, no store visit. Best for the first days and short trips.
  • Local SIM: sold at the airport and in phone stores with your passport; usually cheaper per gigabyte. Best for long stays and heavy use.

Coverage where you will actually be

  • Panama City (Casco Viejo, Cinta Costera, the Canal locks): strong 4G.
  • Boquete and the Chiriquí highlands: good in town; patchy on Volcán Barú and the Quetzal Trail.
  • Bocas del Toro: good on Isla Colón; weaker on outer islands and boat trips.
  • San Blas (Guna Yala): very limited on most islands. Plan to be offline.
  • Darién: essentially no coverage.
