Hong Kong has dense, fast mobile coverage and cheap travel data — and one important difference from mainland China: the internet in Hong Kong is not behind the Great Firewall. Google, WhatsApp and Instagram work normally. That matters if your trip continues across the border to Shenzhen or beyond.

Short answer: for Hong Kong alone, a Hong Kong plan is cheap and simple. If you are crossing into mainland China, buy a plan that explicitly covers mainland China as well — a Hong Kong plan does not.

What a Hong Kong eSIM costs

At the time of writing (October 2026), Wanderly's Hong Kong plans start at $1.99 for 1GB, and 10GB costs around $6. The median across data-only Hong Kong plans is about $0.80 per GB — well under the $1.43 median across 187 countries in the Wanderly eSIM Price Index.

Many of the cheapest bundles are valid for only three days. That suits a stopover; for anything longer, pick validity that covers your full dates.

Hong Kong, Macau and mainland China are separate

This is the part travellers get wrong most often:

  • Hong Kong and Macau have their own mobile networks and an open internet.
  • Mainland China (Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Beijing, Shanghai) is a separate coverage area. Many foreign apps are blocked on local connections there, while travel eSIMs that roam typically route data abroad — see the best eSIM for China.
  • A Hong Kong-only plan will not cover the mainland, and may not cover Macau. Check the plan's country list.

Day trip to Shenzhen? Buy a plan that lists mainland China, or a regional plan that covers all three.

Coverage where you will actually be

Hong Kong's networks (including CSL, SmarTone, China Mobile Hong Kong and 3 Hong Kong) cover the territory densely.

  • MTR: coverage in stations and tunnels.
  • Central, Tsim Sha Tsui, Mong Kok, Causeway Bay: excellent 4G and 5G.
  • The Peak, Star Ferry, Lantau (Big Buddha, Tai O): good coverage.
  • Hiking trails (Dragon's Back, MacLehose, Lantau Trail): mostly covered, with gaps in valleys and remote sections.
