A China travel eSIM is really two products: the mobile connection, and the route your data takes out of the country. On a local Chinese SIM or hotel WiFi, Google, Gmail, WhatsApp, Instagram and many other foreign services are blocked. A well-built travel eSIM avoids that by routing your data outside the mainland — no VPN to install.
Short answer: buy a mainland China plan that routes traffic offshore, install it before you fly, and you can use Google Maps, WhatsApp and Gmail as normal. Also set up Alipay or WeChat Pay before you go — you will need them more than you expect.
How a China travel eSIM gets around the filtering
Wanderly's China plans connect to mainland networks but break out in Hong Kong (a few plans marked nonhkip break out in Singapore). Because your traffic exits outside the mainland, it is not subject to mainland filtering, and services such as Google, WhatsApp and Instagram work normally. That is how the plan is built, not a setting you need to change.
Two caveats:
- Hotel and café WiFi in China are local connections, so blocked services stay blocked on WiFi. Turn WiFi off or rely on mobile data when you need Google or WhatsApp.
- Speeds can be slower than on a local connection because traffic travels further. Fine for maps, messaging and browsing; less good for heavy video calls.

Hong Kong and Macau are separate

Apps to set up before you fly
- Alipay and/or WeChat Pay — China is close to cashless, and both now accept many foreign cards. Set them up and link a card at home.
- A ride-hailing app — DiDi works with foreign cards and has an English interface.
- Maps — Google Maps works over the eSIM, but its street data in China can be out of date. Apple Maps and Amap (Gaode) are often more accurate locally.
- Translation — download Chinese for offline use in your translation app.
- 12306 or Trip.com — for high-speed rail tickets.
Coverage where you will actually be
China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecom cover cities and transport routes densely.
- Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Chengdu, Xi'an: strong 4G and widespread 5G, including on the metros.
- High-speed rail: generally good coverage along the main lines, with brief drops in tunnels.
- Great Wall sections (Mutianyu, Badaling): good coverage.
- Zhangjiajie, Guilin and Yangshuo: good in towns; patchier on mountain trails and river trips.
- Tibet and Xinjiang: extra permits and restrictions apply; check plan coverage and current rules before going.
