How to Save Data While Streaming Abroad
The fastest way to blow through a travel data plan? Autoplay videos on Instagram and Netflix in 4K. Here is how to lock things down so your eSIM lasts the whole trip.
Netflix
In the app: Profile → App Settings → Cellular Data Usage → Save Data. This caps streaming at ~250MB/hour vs. ~1GB+ in HD. For long flights, download episodes while on hotel Wi-Fi instead.
YouTube
Tap your profile → Settings → Video quality preferences → Mobile networks → Data saver (480p or lower). Also turn off Autoplay on the Home feed.
Spotify
Settings → Audio Quality → Cellular streaming → Low (24 kbit/s). Or, the killer move: Download playlists at home before the trip — zero data while listening.
Instagram & TikTok
- Instagram: Settings → Data Usage → Use Less Mobile Data: ON
- TikTok: Settings → Data Saver: ON
General phone tips
- 1Turn off background app refresh for apps you do not need on mobile.
- 2Use Google Maps offline downloads instead of streaming maps.
- 3iCloud Photos / Google Photos backup — set to Wi-Fi only before you fly.
Picking the right plan
If you really need to stream, get an unlimited daily eSIM from Wanderly so you do not stress about gigabytes. Otherwise, 10–20GB is usually plenty for a week if you follow the tips above.
