Does the iPhone 17 Have eSIM?

Yes — every iPhone 17 supports eSIM, and in the US plus 11 other countries the 17, 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max ship eSIM-only with no SIM tray. The iPhone Air is eSIM-only everywhere in the world.

The iPhone 17 generation pushed Apple's eSIM transition further than any before it. In the United States and eleven other countries, the iPhone 17, 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max have no physical SIM tray — every line is an eSIM. In Europe, Australia, New Zealand, South Korea, Singapore, India and most other markets, those same models keep a nano-SIM slot.

The iPhone Air is the exception to every regional rule: it is Apple's first iPhone sold as eSIM-only in every market worldwide.

To check your own handset, look for a tray on the left edge, or open Settings > General > About and find the EID row.

    Regional caveats and limits

    • The twelve eSIM-only countries are the United States, Canada, Mexico, Japan, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman, Guam and the US Virgin Islands.
    • Chinese-market iPhone 17 models use nano-SIM only and cannot run a travel eSIM.
    • On an eSIM-only handset there is no physical fallback, so install your travel plan before departure.
    • The phone must be carrier-unlocked to use a third-party travel eSIM.

How to set up an eSIM on iPhone 17

    1. Connect to Wi-Fi and turn off any VPN.
    2. Settings > Cellular > Add eSIM.
    3. Choose Use QR Code and scan the code from your order email, or Enter Details Manually for the SM-DP+ address and activation code.
    4. Label the plan "Travel" and keep your home number as the default line for calls and iMessage.
    5. After landing: Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data > select the travel eSIM, then turn on Data Roaming for that line.
