Is the iPhone 16e eSIM Compatible?

Yes — the iPhone 16e supports eSIM, and US models are eSIM-only with no physical SIM tray at all. Models sold outside the US keep a nano-SIM slot alongside eSIM.

The iPhone 16e is eSIM-capable everywhere it is sold, but the hardware differs by region. Handsets bought in the United States have no physical SIM tray whatsoever — every line on the phone, including your home carrier, is an eSIM. Models bought in the UK, EU, Japan and most other markets keep a nano-SIM slot next to the eSIM.

That makes the US 16e an unusually good travel phone: because both lines are electronic, you can run your home number and a travel data plan as two eSIMs without touching a tray or carrying a pin.

To confirm which variant you have, look at the left edge of the phone. No tray means the eSIM-only model. You can also check Settings > General > About for the EID row, which is present on every 16e.

iPhone 16e eSIM support by region

    ModeleSIM support
iPhone 16e (United States)eSIM only — no SIM tray, two active eSIMs
iPhone 16e (UK, EU, Japan, most markets)eSIM + nano-SIM, or two active eSIMs
    iPhone 16e (mainland China)No eSIM — nano-SIM only
    iPhone 16e (Hong Kong, Macao)No eSIM — nano-SIM only

    Regional caveats and limits

    • US models cannot fall back to a physical SIM, so a travel plan must be installed as an eSIM — buy and install before you fly if you will land without Wi-Fi.
    • Mainland-China, Hong Kong and Macao variants ship without eSIM hardware and cannot be converted.
    • The phone must be carrier-unlocked before a third-party travel eSIM will connect.
    • The 16e holds several stored eSIM profiles and keeps two active at once.

How to set up an eSIM on iPhone 16e

    1. Connect to Wi-Fi and turn off any VPN.
    2. Settings > Cellular > Add eSIM > Use QR Code.
    3. Scan the code from your order email, or tap Enter Details Manually for the SM-DP+ address and activation code.
    4. Label the plan "Travel" so it is easy to tell apart from your home line.
    5. On arrival: Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data > select the travel eSIM, then enable Data Roaming on that line only.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the iPhone 16e eSIM compatible?

Yes. Every iPhone 16e supports eSIM except models sold in mainland China, Hong Kong and Macao.

Is the iPhone 16e eSIM only?

In the United States, yes — there is no SIM tray. Models sold in the UK, EU, Japan and most other markets still include a nano-SIM slot.

Does the iPhone 16e have a SIM card slot?

US models do not. International models do, and can run one nano-SIM plus one eSIM at the same time.

How many eSIMs can the iPhone 16e hold?

It stores several profiles and keeps two active simultaneously.

Can I use a travel eSIM on the iPhone 16e?

Yes, as long as the phone is carrier-unlocked. On US eSIM-only models this is the only way to add a local or travel data plan.

If your iPhone 16e supports eSIM, a Wanderly travel plan installs in a couple of minutes and keeps your home number active.
