Does the iPhone 13 Have eSIM?

Before buying a travel eSIM

  1. Settings > General > About > Carrier Lock should say ‘No SIM restrictions’. If it does not, contact your home carrier; eSIM hardware alone does not mean the phone is unlocked.
  2. Compare your model and purchase region with the table below. A second IMEI can belong to a physical SIM and does not prove eSIM support.
  3. Choose plans for your destination and check coverage, validity and what starts the activation clock. Install over Wi-Fi following the instructions for the plan you bought.

The iPhone 13 was the first iPhone generation to support two active eSIMs at the same time, alongside the physical nano-SIM tray. That makes it a particularly good travel phone: you can keep your home number, add a travel data plan, and switch between them in settings.

Regional caveats and limits

  • Devices bought in mainland China ship without eSIM hardware and cannot be converted.
  • Hong Kong and Macao iPhone 13, Pro and Pro Max models use two physical SIMs. The 13 mini is the exception and supports eSIM there.
  • The phone must be carrier-unlocked to use a third-party travel eSIM.
  • You can store several eSIM profiles and keep two active simultaneously.
  • iOS 16.2 or later is recommended — earlier versions had eSIM Quick Transfer limitations.

How to set up an eSIM on iPhone 13

  1. Connect to Wi-Fi and turn off any VPN.
  2. Settings > Cellular > Add eSIM > Use QR Code.
  3. Scan the code from your order email, or tap Enter Details Manually to type the SM-DP+ address and activation code.
  4. Label the plan ("Travel") and keep your existing line as the default for calls.
  5. After landing: Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data > select the travel eSIM, then enable Data Roaming on that line.
