The verdict for China mainland
The hard part is the route out. Our China plans break out in Hong Kong, putting traffic beyond the mainland filtering regime so Google, Gmail, WhatsApp and Instagram work without a VPN. Airalo's China packages route offshore for the same reason. Neither of us is doing anything exotic; this is simply how a usable China travel eSIM has to be built.
Where we differ is that we sell the choice explicitly. Most of our China plans use a Hong Kong breakout, and several marked nonhkip use Singapore. If you have a reason to prefer one — a service that behaves differently by apparent region, or a latency preference toward Southeast Asia — you can pick. That is an unusual amount of control to be given over routing, and for some travellers it is the whole decision.
Airalo's advantage is the same as everywhere: a better app, smooth top-ups, and credit that is worth spending if you already hold it. In China specifically, an in-app usage meter is more useful than usual, because consumption is genuinely higher and harder to estimate.

Coverage in China mainland
Mainland China has some of the best mobile infrastructure anywhere. 5G density in Shanghai, Beijing, Shenzhen and Chengdu exceeds most of Europe, and the high-speed rail network is covered almost end to end, including long tunnel sections. Coverage stays strong well into second and third-tier cities. The honest gaps are the Tibetan plateau, the Taklamakan and the far northwest, and some mountain valleys in Yunnan and Sichuan.

How travellers actually use data here
China is the most app-dependent destination we sell. Maps, a translation app running near-constantly, WeChat for everything from messaging to payment, and ride-hailing. Video and photo upload push allowances higher than a comparable European trip.
Routing: This is the part that matters in China, and it is worth reading before you buy anywhere. Our standard China plans break out in Hong Kong, which puts your traffic outside the mainland filtering regime — Google, WhatsApp, Instagram and Gmail behave normally, with no VPN involved. A few plans marked nonhkip break out in Singapore instead, for the same reason and with slightly different latency. Neither routing is a workaround you have to configure; it is simply where the traffic leaves.

China mainland vs Airalo — common questions
What is the difference between the standard and nonhkip China plans?
The breakout location. Standard plans route out through Hong Kong; plans marked nonhkip route through Singapore. Both sit outside mainland filtering, so both give unrestricted access — the difference is latency and apparent region, not capability.
Does high-speed rail have coverage?
Almost end to end, including long tunnel sections. Chinese mobile infrastructure is among the best anywhere, and 5G density in the major cities exceeds most of Europe.
Does either provide a Chinese phone number?
Not a mainland Chinese one. We do sell China plans that include calls and texts, with a number assigned after purchase that may be issued outside China; the other provider is data-only. Mainland services that want a Chinese number for SMS verification need a physical local SIM with local identity registration, which no travel eSIM replaces.
