Mexico eSIM plans at a glance

Wanderly lists 38 fixed-data Mexico plans, ranging from 1GB up to 50GB over 3 to 30 days. Prices start at $3.99, and the lowest cost per gigabyte is $0.66/GB on the 50GB 3-day plan.

Unlimited day-passes are also available from $3.99 per day, billed per day rather than per gigabyte. 5 of the 42 Mexico data-only plans can be topped up without reinstalling the eSIM.

Calls and SMS depend on the selected plan. Install using the supplied QR code and keep your home number on its own line. Activation timing varies by plan; check your selected plan's terms before purchasing or installing.

Choose a Mexico eSIM for your itinerary

Mexico City, Cancún or a beach stay

Match validity to the full stay and size your allowance around navigation, transport, messaging and time away from Wi-Fi. Compare a plan's total price and data rather than buying a large allowance only for a low price per GB.

Baja, rural routes or remote beaches

Check the exact plan's supported networks and keep maps, tickets and accommodation details available offline. A Mexico coverage entry does not guarantee continuous signal on every road, in rural areas or offshore.

Mexico with the USA or Canada

For San Diego–Tijuana or another multi-country trip, compare a North America bundle with separate country plans. Confirm all your stops in the bundle's country list and check the activation rule before a covered stopover starts its validity.

Open the current plan's details before buying: check validity, activation timing, coverage, hotspot rules and any fair-use limits. Calls and texts are included only when stated for that plan.

🇲🇽 About eSIMs in Mexico

Mexico's network quality varies sharply by region, and Telcel has significantly better coverage than any other carrier — especially in the Yucatan, Baja California, and the Pacific coast. Wanderly Mexico eSIM plans use Telcel, so you get strong 4G in Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, CDMX, Guadalajara, Puerto Vallarta and along the Baja peninsula.

You will lean on Uber and Didi in the cities, WhatsApp for everything (Mexico runs on WhatsApp), and Google Maps for the countless one-way streets in Roma Norte and Condesa. 10–15 GB is comfortable for a week; two-week travelers with a Yucatan road trip or Baja itinerary usually want 20 GB.

Retail SIM kiosks at Cancun (CUN) and CDMX (MEX) are fine but marked up. Install the eSIM at home and you connect immediately after immigration.

A Mexico eSIM gives you data, not a Mexican phone number. That is rarely a problem: Mexico runs on WhatsApp, so hotels, tour operators and restaurants usually message there. Keep your home line on for texts and bank codes with its data roaming off, and check your carrier's charges for calls received abroad. If you need ordinary calls and SMS, a Calls & texts plan includes a number assigned after purchase, which may not be Mexican. To make a smaller plan last, download offline maps of the Yucatan or Baja before road trips. See our Mexico eSIM guide.

How to activate your eSIM in Mexico

  1. 1
    Install on Wi-Fi
Scan the QR before you fly. Data does not start until first use.
  2. 2
    Enable on arrival
At CUN, MEX or GDL, turn the Mexico eSIM on and enable Data Roaming. Keep your primary SIM for iMessage.
  3. 3
    Get WhatsApp working
Mexico runs on WhatsApp — hosts, tour operators and taxis will message you there. Make sure it is signed in.
  4. 4
    Download Yucatan maps
Save Tulum, Bacalar and the Riviera Maya offline in Google Maps for those cenote back-roads.

Mexico eSIM FAQ

Which Mexican network does it use?

Telcel — the largest and most reliable carrier, especially for Yucatan cenote roads and Baja.

Will it work in Tulum jungle areas and cenotes?

Yes on the highway and towns. Signal thins on deep jungle roads but returns at every cenote entrance.

Does it work on Isla Mujeres and Cozumel?

Yes, Telcel covers both islands with 4G in populated areas.

How much data for 2 weeks in Mexico?

15–20 GB. Add unlimited if you plan Baja road-trip stretches or heavy WhatsApp/Instagram.

Can I use it for Uber?

Yes, Uber works throughout Mexico City, Guadalajara, Monterrey and most tourist areas.

Does a Mexico eSIM include a Mexican phone number?

Data-only plans do not. Use WhatsApp for calls and messages, which most Mexican businesses use. A Calls & texts plan adds ordinary calls and SMS on a number that may not be Mexican.

Is an eSIM better than a Telcel SIM from the airport?

For most visitors, yes: it is installed before you fly, so you are online after immigration with no queue, and your home line stays on for texts. A local SIM can be cheaper for a long stay.
