🇸🇦 About eSIMs in Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia has 5G in its major cities. The main networks are STC, Mobily and Zain. Some current plans list Mobily and Zain, and others list Mobily alone, so check the plan details before you buy. Expect strong coverage in Riyadh, Jeddah, Dammam, Makkah and Madinah, plus service along the main highways and around AlUla.

An eSIM is particularly useful here because local prepaid SIMs require in-person registration with your passport and, in some cases, a biometric check — a slow process at the airport. An eSIM you install before you fly skips all of it.

Note that VoIP calling on some apps has historically been restricted in the Kingdom; data, messaging and maps work normally. For a week of maps, ride-hailing and messaging, 5–10 GB is typical; pilgrims often want more for video calls home. Installation is a quick QR scan.

How to activate your eSIM in Saudi Arabia

  1. 1
    Time the installation
Check the selected plan's start rule. If it starts on its first network connection and allows installation before travel, install it over reliable Wi-Fi before you fly; if it starts at installation, install it when you need it. You skip the passport registration required for local prepaid SIMs.
  2. 2
    Install the eSIM
iPhone: Settings → Cellular → Add eSIM → Scan QR. Android: Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → Add eSIM.
  3. 3
    Land and switch data
At RUH, JED or DMM, cycle airplane mode, set the Saudi eSIM as your data line and turn on Data Roaming for it.
  4. 4
    Test with maps and ride-hailing
Open Google Maps or Careem before leaving the terminal to confirm you have 4G/5G.

Saudi Arabia eSIM FAQ

Do I need to register my passport?

No. That requirement applies to local physical prepaid SIMs. You install a travel eSIM yourself by QR code, with no in-person registration.

Which networks does it use?

It depends on the plan. Some current Saudi Arabia plans list Mobily and Zain, and others list Mobily alone. The plan details show the network where one is named, so check them before you buy if it matters to you.

Will it work in Makkah and Madinah during Hajj or Umrah?

Yes, both cities are well covered, though networks are congested during peak pilgrimage periods, as they are for local users.

Can I make WhatsApp calls?

Messaging and data work normally. Some VoIP calling features have been restricted in the past, so plan to rely on messaging if calls fail.

How much data should I buy?

5–10 GB for a week of maps, ride-hailing and messaging. Choose more if you plan frequent video calls.
