An eSIM (embedded SIM) is a small rewritable chip soldered inside your phone that does the job of a plastic SIM card. Instead of inserting a card, you download a profile — a set of credentials that connects you to a mobile network.
Because the profile is software, you can add a plan in a couple of minutes from anywhere with an internet connection, and hold several plans on one device at the same time.
How it works
- You buy a plan and receive a QR code or install link.
- Your phone downloads the profile from the provider's SM-DP+ server over Wi-Fi.
- The profile is written to the eSIM chip and appears as a new line in your settings.
- You choose which line carries data and, for travel plans, enable roaming on that line.
