🇨🇾 About eSIMs in Cyprus

The Republic of Cyprus has been an EU member since 2004, and the EU's roam like at home rules apply across the EU, so travelers with an EU SIM may not need anything extra in Limassol, Larnaca, Paphos or Ayia Napa. Your operator can still apply a fair-use policy to roaming data. If you are flying in from the UK, the US or anywhere your carrier charges for roaming, a Cyprus eSIM gets you data as soon as you land at Larnaca or Paphos (Pafos) airport. Some current Cyprus plans list Epic and Vodafone as their networks, and others do not publish a carrier.

The north is a different case. The EU says the whole island is EU territory, but EU law is suspended in the areas where the Cypriot government does not exercise effective control. Northern Cyprus has its own operators, Kuzey Kıbrıs Turkcell and KKTC Telsim, which uses Vodafone branding. Republic operators treat it as a separate roaming area: PrimeTel, for example, says roaming there is not enabled by default and is charged at its own rates. Wanderly sells separate plans for Northern Cyprus, which list Turkcell, Vodafone and Türk Telekom. A plan that lists only Epic and Vodafone names no northern network, so do not count on it in Kyrenia (Girne), Famagusta or north Nicosia.

Crossing the Green Line is routine, but plan ahead. The UK Foreign Office says you can use any crossing point to move between north and south, and that the Ledra Palace and Ledra/Lokmaci Street crossings in Nicosia are for pedestrians only. Cars hired in the Republic are often not insured for the north, and you will not be let through a crossing without the right insurance documents. Note too that if you fly into Ercan in the north, the Republic's authorities consider that an illegal entry.

For the Troodos mountains or the Akamas peninsula, download offline maps before you leave the coast. The Foreign Office says wildfire risk is high from April to October, advises making sure your phone is registered to receive emergency alerts, and says to call 112 in immediate danger. Most Cyprus plans are data-only with no Cypriot number, and a few larger plans add calls and texts. For a side-by-side look at options, see our guide to the best eSIM for Cyprus in 2026.

How to activate your eSIM in Cyprus

  1. 1
Decide whether you need the north
If your trip stays in the Republic of Cyprus, a Cyprus plan is the one to look at. If you will visit Kyrenia, Famagusta or north Nicosia, choose a plan for Northern Cyprus too, or ask support which networks your plan uses before buying.
  2. 2
Check your phone and the plan's start rule
Make sure your phone is carrier-unlocked and supports eSIM. Most current Cyprus plans start validity on first network connection; the plans that add calls and texts start at installation, so install those only when you are ready to use them.
  3. 3
Switch your data line at Larnaca or Paphos
After landing, set the Wanderly eSIM as your cellular data line and turn on data roaming for that line. Keep your home SIM on for calls and texts if you still need them, and check your carrier's rates before letting it use data.
  4. 4
Prepare for the Line and the mountains
Before crossing to the north, carry your passport and, if driving, insurance valid there. If you are staying near the Line in Nicosia, you can set network selection to manual so your phone stays on a network your plan lists. Download offline maps before Troodos or Akamas trips.

Cyprus eSIM FAQ

Do I need a Cyprus eSIM if I have an EU SIM?

Possibly not in the Republic of Cyprus. Roam like at home applies across the EU, and Cyprus has been a member since 2004, though your operator can apply a fair-use limit on roaming data. The north is different: EU law is suspended in the areas the government does not control, and Republic operators such as PrimeTel bill roaming there separately.

Will a Cyprus eSIM work in Northern Cyprus?

Not reliably. Current Cyprus plans list Epic and Vodafone, while the north is served by Kuzey Kıbrıs Turkcell and KKTC Telsim. Wanderly sells separate Northern Cyprus plans that list Turkcell, Vodafone and Türk Telekom. If you plan to visit Kyrenia or Famagusta, choose a plan for the north as well, or confirm coverage with support before buying.

Can I cross the Green Line in Nicosia?

Yes. The UK Foreign Office says you can use any crossing point between north and south, and that the Ledra Palace and Ledra/Lokmaci Street crossings are for pedestrians only. Hire cars from the Republic often lack insurance for the north, and you will not be let through without the right documents. Carry your passport.

Which network will my Cyprus eSIM use?

It depends on the plan. Some current Cyprus plans list Epic and Vodafone, with 4G and 5G, and others do not publish a carrier. Plans sold for Northern Cyprus list Turkcell, Vodafone and Türk Telekom. If you need a specific network, ask support before you buy.

Does a Cyprus eSIM come with a phone number?

Most Cyprus plans are data-only, with no Cypriot number, so use messaging and calling apps over data and keep your home line for texts such as bank codes. A few larger Cyprus plans add calls and texts; they start validity at installation. For an emergency, including a wildfire, the UK Foreign Office says to call 112.
