Finland has excellent mobile coverage, generous data culture and cheap travel eSIMs. The traps are on the water: the ferries to Tallinn and Stockholm can switch your phone onto an onboard maritime network, which is billed at very high satellite-style rates on many home plans.
Short answer: a Finland plan with 30-day validity suits most trips. On the Baltic ferries, turn off data roaming on your home line and use the ship's WiFi or keep the eSIM selected.
What a Finland eSIM costs
At the time of writing (October 2026), Wanderly's Finland plans start at $2.99 for 1GB, with 10GB for 30 days around $8 and 20GB for 30 days around $12. The median across data-only Finland plans is about $0.80 per GB — well under the $1.43 median across 187 countries in the Wanderly eSIM Price Index.
Finland has 30-day options even at larger sizes, which suits a winter trip to Lapland.
Do you need an eSIM with your phone plan?
EU plans roam in Finland at domestic rates, subject to fair use. UK, US and Canadian plans usually charge for roaming. See eSIM vs international plan.
The ferry trap
The Helsinki–Tallinn and Helsinki/Turku–Stockholm ferries often carry an onboard mobile network once they are away from shore. That network is not covered by EU roaming rules, and some home carriers charge a lot for it. Before boarding:
- Turn off data roaming on your home line.
- Use the ship's WiFi, or keep your travel eSIM selected and check whether it is connected to a land network.
- Remember that a Finland-only plan will not cover Estonia or Sweden on arrival — see the best eSIM for Sweden.
Networks and coverage
Finland's networks are Elisa, Telia and DNA. Travel eSIMs connect to a partner network automatically.
- Helsinki (including the metro): excellent 4G and 5G.
- Turku, Tampere, Oulu: excellent.
- Rovaniemi and Santa Claus Village: good.
- Lapland resorts (Levi, Saariselkä, Ylläs): good in resorts; gaps in the wilderness and on long snowmobile or husky routes.
- Lakeland: good in towns, weaker at remote cottages.
Cold weather drains phone batteries quickly in Lapland. Keep your phone in an inside pocket and carry a power bank.
How much data you need
