Sweden is one of the cheapest countries in the world for travel eSIM data, and one of the best covered — Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmö have excellent 4G and 5G, and coverage reaches far into the north. It is also close to cashless, so having data for card and app payments, transit tickets and maps matters more than in many places.

Short answer: a 5–10GB Sweden plan installed before you fly suits most trips. In Lapland and on long hikes, expect gaps and download maps first.

What a Sweden eSIM costs

At the time of writing (October 2026), Wanderly's Sweden plans start at $2.99, with 5GB for 7 days around $4. The median across data-only Sweden plans is about $0.65 per GB — among the very cheapest of the 187 countries in the Wanderly eSIM Price Index, where only two countries have a lower median.

Some of the cheapest large bundles last only a few days. For a longer trip, choose validity that covers every day.

Do you need an eSIM with your phone plan?

EU plans roam in Sweden at domestic rates, subject to fair use. UK, US and Canadian plans usually charge for roaming. See eSIM vs international plan.

Networks and coverage

Sweden's networks are Telia, Tele2, Telenor and Tre. Travel eSIMs connect to a partner network automatically.

  • Stockholm (including the tunnelbana): excellent.
  • Stockholm archipelago: good on the inhabited islands and most ferry routes.
  • Gothenburg and Malmö: excellent.
  • Gotland: good.
  • Lapland (Kiruna, Abisko, Jukkasjärvi): good in towns; gaps in the national parks and on the Kungsleden trail.
  • Night trains to the north: usable, with gaps in remote stretches.

A nearly cashless country

Many Swedish shops, cafés and transport services do not take cash. International cards and Apple Pay or Google Pay work widely. Swish, the local payment app, needs a Swedish bank account, so visitors use cards instead. Transit apps such as SL (Stockholm) and Västtrafik (Gothenburg) sell tickets over data.
