Mozambique stretches over 2,500 km of coastline, and mobile coverage follows the main road and the larger towns rather than blanketing the country. For most travellers — Maputo, then a dive town, then possibly an island — that's manageable, but it pays to know which legs are offline.
Mozambique's mobile networks
Vodacom Moçambique has the widest coverage and is the usual choice for travel eSIMs.
Tmcel is the state operator, with reach into some rural areas the others don't serve.
Movitel has invested heavily in rural infrastructure and covers a surprising amount of the interior.
Most travel eSIMs route through Vodacom. For coastal and city travel that's the right network.
Coverage, region by region
Maputo — Strong 4G across the city, with 5G in parts of the Baixa, Sommerschield and Polana. Good coverage on the Katembe bridge and out toward Ponta do Ouro.
Ponta do Ouro and Ponta Malongane — Reasonable in the settlements, patchy at the more remote camps. The 4x4 track down from the border has gaps.
Inhambane and Tofo — Decent in Inhambane town and around Tofo's main beach and dive shops. It thins toward Barra and Tofinho. Dive boats lose signal offshore, which is expected.
Vilanculos — Good in town, which matters because it's the jumping-off point for Bazaruto.
Bazaruto Archipelago — Limited. Some signal on Benguerra and Bazaruto near the lodges, very little elsewhere. Treat island days as offline and enjoy them.
Beira — Solid coverage in the city.
Pemba — Good in town and around Wimbe beach.
Quirimbas Archipelago — Very limited. Ibo Island has some coverage; the outer islands generally don't. Lodges typically have satellite or Wi-Fi, but don't count on mobile data.
Gorongosa National Park — Coverage near the main camp, little on game drives.
The EN1 highway — Covered near towns with real gaps between them. If you're driving the coast, download offline maps.
Niassa and the far north interior — Expect very little. Note also that parts of northern Cabo Delgado have had security issues; check current travel advice, which matters far more than connectivity.
How much data do you need?
Beach and dive travel is naturally light on data — you'll be offline for chunks of it regardless.

Setting up before you fly
Install at home on Wi-Fi a day or two before departure.

Practical tips for Mozambique
- Driving up from South Africa? A Mozambique-only plan won't work on the South African side. Check a regional Southern Africa plan if you're crossing at Ressano Garcia or Kosi Bay.
- Download offline maps for the EN1. The gaps between towns are long and the road is the whole trip.
- Portuguese is the official language — offline translation is genuinely useful outside the tourist hubs.
- Cyclone season runs roughly November to April. Storms can damage infrastructure and disrupt networks regionally. Worth knowing if you're travelling then.
- Save dive footage uploads for Wi-Fi. Video files will eat a plan in one sitting.
