Short answer to the question most people are asking: yes, Holafly is legitimate. It is an established travel eSIM company, founded in Spain in 2018, that sells to travellers in roughly 200 destinations and delivers working eSIMs. If you are worried about paying and getting nothing, you will not.
Whether it is the *right* eSIM for your trip depends almost entirely on one thing: whether you actually need unlimited data. This review explains why — with the disclosure that we sell travel eSIMs too, so we are a competitor, not a neutral reviewer. We have tried to keep the assessment fair, and where Holafly is the better choice we say so.
What Holafly sells
Holafly's core product is the unlimited-data travel eSIM, priced by the number of days rather than by gigabytes. You pick a destination and a trip length, and the price rises with the days. It also sells regional plans (Europe, for example) and a monthly subscription aimed at frequent travellers.
That model is the opposite of most of the market. Airalo, Saily, Nomad and Wanderly mostly sell fixed-data plans: a set number of gigabytes over a validity window, priced per gigabyte.
What Holafly does well
No meter to watch. For heavy users — daily video calls, streaming, uploading lots of video — not tracking an allowance is genuinely valuable. You will not run out mid-trip.
Simple choice. Destination plus number of days. First-time eSIM buyers find this easier than estimating gigabytes.
Some plans include a phone number. Most travel eSIMs, including most of ours, are data-only. If you need to receive SMS on the trip, that is a real differentiator worth checking for your destination. (We also sell Calls & texts plans in many destinations.)
Support and track record. Holafly has been operating since 2018, offers round-the-clock chat support, and is widely reviewed. It is not a fly-by-night operation.
Where Holafly falls short
Price per trip for typical users. Because pricing is per day, a long trip gets expensive quickly. A traveller who uses maps, messaging and social media will typically use a few gigabytes a week — and a fixed-data plan for that amount usually costs a fraction of an unlimited plan for the same dates.
"Unlimited" has a fair-usage policy. After a daily high-speed allowance, speeds are typically reduced. You are not cut off, but you are slowed. Read the specific plan's terms.
Hotspot limits. Tethering is restricted or capped on many Holafly plans. If you plan to run a laptop from your phone, check this before buying — it is the most common reason Holafly disappoints remote workers.
Is Holafly worth it? A quick test
Before buying, run this three-step check:
- 1Estimate your real usage. Use our data calculator guide. Most travellers overestimate.
- 2Price a fixed-data plan that covers that amount for the same dates.
- 3Compare the totals. If the unlimited plan costs two or three times as much for data you will not use, it is not worth it for you.
Holafly wins when you are a genuinely heavy user, need a phone number, or simply value never thinking about data. A fixed-data plan wins for most other trips.
Holafly by destination
The gap between Holafly and a fixed-data plan varies a lot by country, because local wholesale data prices vary. We publish country-by-country breakdowns:

Holafly vs Airalo
The two biggest names solve different problems. Airalo sells fixed-data plans with the widest destination list; Holafly sells unlimited plans priced per day. Full breakdown in Airalo vs Holafly, and our Airalo review covers the other side.
Common complaints, and whether they are fair
"It slowed down." That is the fair-usage policy at work. Fair complaint about marketing clarity, not a fault.
"I couldn't hotspot my laptop." Check tethering terms before buying. Fair complaint if the limit was not clear at checkout.
"It did not work when I landed." Usually data roaming is off for the eSIM line, or the eSIM is not selected for mobile data. Our troubleshooting guide covers the sequence, and it applies to every provider.
"I could not get a refund." Refunds on installed or activated plans are restricted across the category. Check your phone is eSIM-compatible and carrier-unlocked before buying.
