- 4Activate it on arrival. Turn on the Airalo line, select it for mobile data, and set Data Roaming on or off as the app's instructions say.
When does the plan start? Airalo says most of its eSIMs activate when they first connect to a supported network at your destination. Some activate at installation, wherever you are. Each package shows its rule under Additional Information → Activation Policy before you buy, so check it before installing early.

What Airalo does well
Coverage breadth. If you're going somewhere unusual — Central Asia, smaller Pacific islands, parts of West Africa — Airalo is more likely than anyone to have a local plan. For obscure destinations this is a genuine reason to pick them.
The app. Clean, mature, well-tested. Top-ups are straightforward, which matters more than people expect — running out mid-trip and needing more data is common. More on the app below.
Airmoney. You earn credit back on purchases — 5% at the starting level, rising to 10% at Airalo's top loyalty tier. For someone travelling several times a year this compounds into a real saving and is the strongest argument for consolidating on one provider. Where Airalo falls short
It's rarely the cheapest. Airalo's scale doesn't translate into category-leading prices. On many destinations you can find the same allowance cheaper elsewhere. Their pricing is fair, not aggressive.
Mostly data-only. Most Airalo packages are data-only: no phone number, no SMS, so you can't receive two-factor codes on that line. Some packages now include calls and texts — they are labelled "Data, Voice & Text" under Plan Type. Airalo says local packages with calls and texts work only for local calls and texts within that country. WhatsApp, FaceTime and similar work fine over data. Coverage quality varies by country. Because each destination runs on a different local carrier agreement, the experience isn't uniform. Airalo is excellent in some countries and mediocre in others, and the marketing doesn't distinguish. Check destination-specific reviews rather than assuming.
Support is thin on carrier-side problems. When the issue is the underlying local network rather than the eSIM profile, there's often little any reseller can do quickly. This is a category-wide limitation, not an Airalo failing, but people encounter it and blame the brand.

On 24 October 2026, Airalo's Trustpilot page showed a TrustScore of 4.2 out of 5 from 48,442 reviews. 63% were five-star and 16% were one-star. The profile is claimed, Airalo invites customers to review, and Trustpilot lists a 95% reply rate to negative reviews. Trustpilot screens reviews with software but does not fact-check them.
Reading the recent reviews, the pattern was consistent:
- Positive reviews mention a quick purchase and install, an easy app, connections that worked in many countries, and helpful step-by-step support.

"My data didn't work on arrival." Usually a settings issue rather than a defective eSIM — Data Roaming often needs to be on for the travel eSIM line specifically, and the line needs to be selected for mobile data. "It used my data faster than expected." Almost always background app refresh, automatic photo backup, or app updates running over cellular. Worth checking how much data you actually need and disabling background sync before you travel.
"The plan expired before I used it." Most Airalo plans start their validity when the eSIM first connects to a network at your destination — not at purchase. But some activate at installation, and the package's Activation Policy says which. Install early only after checking it. Genuinely confusing for first-timers, and a fair criticism of how clearly it's communicated.
"I couldn't get a refund." Airalo's refunds depend on why you are asking. For a wrong purchase or a change of plans, Airalo says Airmoney is the only refund method. For installation problems or an eSIM that doesn't work, you can choose Airmoney or a refund to your original payment method. Expired or fully used eSIMs are not eligible. Airalo says its support is available 24/7. The main channel is live chat, reached from Airalo's contact page or the app. There is also a help centre with guides on installation, Airmoney and troubleshooting. Refund requests start from your Airalo account; Airalo says the refund option appears only on eligible orders.
On Trustpilot, Airalo replies to most negative reviews, typically within a month. Some reviewers praise the chat; others say it could not fix network-side problems. That fits the limit above: support can fix an eSIM profile, but not a weak local network.
The Airalo app

Airalo hotspot and unlimited data
Can you use an Airalo eSIM as a hotspot?
Usually, yes. Airalo says you can use personal hotspot with its eSIMs as long as your device and the network support it. Some eSIMs need an APN entered for hotspot as well — check the eSIM's installation page in the app. On a standard plan, hotspot use comes out of the data you bought, so a laptop can use a small plan quickly. Does Airalo have unlimited data?
Yes, in many destinations, but it is not unlimited full speed. Airalo's unlimited page says these packages have a fair-use limit of 3GB per day at 20 Mbps. After that your connection continues at reduced speeds, and full speed resets every 24 hours. Airalo says its unlimited eSIMs support hotspot, and hotspot data counts toward the same daily allowance. On 24 October 2026 the page showed unlimited packages starting from $9.50 (Belgium, Croatia and Thailand).
If you mainly use maps and messaging, a fixed plan is often cheaper. Read whether unlimited eSIMs are really unlimited before you pay for one.
Airalo for Europe and global trips
Europe. Airalo's regional Europe package is worth a look when your trip crosses several borders, because one eSIM and one allowance cover every included country. "Europe" is not a fixed list, though. Before you pay, open the package's country list and tick off every stop, including the UK, Switzerland and any islands or transit countries. If you are staying in one country, price that country's package instead: you pay for breadth you will not use. Global. A global package simplifies a trip across several regions, but read the destination list of the specific package rather than trusting the word "global", and compare it with separate country or regional plans for the places where you will spend most of your time. Do not pay extra to cover an airport where you will stay on Wi-Fi.
Calls and SMS. Most Airalo packages, regional and global included, are data-only. If you need to call a hotel or receive a verification text, check the plan type before you buy.
Before you troubleshoot: don't delete the eSIM
If an Airalo eSIM is not connecting, check that the line is turned on, selected for mobile data and has Data Roaming set as the app says, then try choosing the network manually. Do not delete the eSIM as an early step. Like most travel eSIMs, a deleted profile usually cannot simply be reinstalled. When you read Airalo app reviews, give more weight to ones that name the destination, package and phone. A one-star "didn't work" says little about your trip; a detailed review of the same country and network says a lot.
