🇹🇭 About eSIMs in Thailand
Thailand's main operators are AIS and True, which merged with dtac in 2023. Expect strong 4G and expanding 5G in the places most travelers go, including Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket, Koh Samui and Krabi, with weaker signal on the mountain roads around Pai. Some current plans list AIS, others list dtac and a few list both, so check the plan details. Signal can thin on longtail boats around Phi Phi and in the Chiang Mai hills.
Data burns fast in Thailand because you are Grab-ing everywhere, translating menus, and posting sunsets. A 7-day, 10 GB plan is comfortable for a first-timer; two-week island hoppers usually want 15–20 GB. Unlimited plans are worth it if you rely on Google Meet, Zoom or Netflix in the evenings.
The SIM booths at Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang work fine but are marked up. An eSIM set up according to your plan's start rule lets you skip the queue entirely.
How to activate your eSIM in Thailand
- 1Time the installationCheck the selected plan's start rule. If it starts on its first network connection and allows installation before travel, install it over reliable Wi-Fi before you fly; if it starts at installation, install it when you need it.
- 2Turn on after landingEnable the Thailand eSIM as your primary data line, keep your home SIM for iMessage. Turn on Data Roaming (required for eSIMs).
- 3Grab and LineInstall the Grab app for taxis and Line for restaurant bookings and guesthouses — both need data to sign up.
- 4Hotspot for travel buddiesWanderly Thailand plans allow tethering, so your partner or a group of friends can share one plan on longer trips.
Thailand eSIM FAQ
Does it work on Thai islands?
Yes, on the main islands: Koh Samui, Phuket, Koh Phangan, Koh Tao, Koh Lanta and Krabi generally have 4G coverage in the populated areas, depending on the network your plan lists. Expect signal to drop on smaller islands and between them.
How much data do I need for 2 weeks in Thailand?
15 GB covers navigation, Grab, WhatsApp and social. Go 20 GB or unlimited if you stream video on beach nights or work remotely.
Can I use Grab and Line?
Yes. Both work over mobile data on Wanderly Thailand plans. Grab in particular saves you from taxi meter arguments.
Does it work in Pai and rural north?
In towns and along much of the main road, yes. Expect signal to drop on the mountain switchbacks between Chiang Mai and Pai and on parts of the Mae Hong Son loop, so save maps offline before you ride.
Is hotspot supported?
Hotspot terms vary by plan, so check the plan details for permission and any separate limit before relying on it.
