An eSIM QR code is an installation credential, not an ordinary website QR code. Scan it from your phone's Add eSIM screen while connected to reliable Wi-Fi—not from the Camera app.
If the code says it has already been used, first check whether the eSIM is already installed. Scanning it repeatedly can hide the real problem, which may only be that the installed line is turned off.
Scan the QR code correctly
- Open the QR code on a second screen, such as a laptop, tablet, or another phone. If your phone supports scanning from Photos, a clear screenshot can also work.
- Connect the phone receiving the eSIM to stable private Wi-Fi and disable any VPN temporarily.
- On iPhone, open Settings > Cellular or Mobile Service > Add eSIM > Use QR Code.
- On Android, open Settings > Network & Internet or Connections > SIMs or SIM Manager > Add eSIM.
- Hold the phone steady, avoid glare, and keep the entire code inside the frame.
If the code says already used or no longer valid
Most travel eSIM QR codes are single-use. An 'already used' message often means the profile downloaded successfully during an earlier attempt.
- Look through every installed SIM or Cellular Plan for a new line, even if it is labelled Secondary, Business, Personal, or Mobile Data.
- Compare its ICCID with the ICCID in your Wanderly order when available.
- Turn that line on and complete the activation settings instead of scanning again.
- Do not delete the profile to start over; contact support first if you cannot identify it.
If the phone cannot add the eSIM
- Confirm the exact phone model supports eSIM and that the device is carrier-unlocked.
- Install pending iOS or Android updates and restart the phone.
- Remove an expired profile only if you are certain it is not the new Wanderly eSIM and your device has reached its stored-profile limit.
- Use the manual SM-DP+ address and activation code from your installation details when those fields are provided.
- Try a different private Wi-Fi connection if hotel or airport Wi-Fi uses a sign-in page.
Find the QR code again
Check the delivery email and its spam folder, then open the order in your Wanderly dashboard. If neither copy is available, contact support with the order number and the email used at checkout.
Frequently asked questions
Can I scan the QR code with my Camera app?
No. Start from Add eSIM in your cellular or SIM settings so the phone treats the code as an eSIM profile.
Can I scan a QR code shown on the same phone?
Some phones can import a saved image, but a second screen is the most reliable method.
Does 'code already used' mean the eSIM is lost?
Not necessarily. It commonly means the profile is already installed. Check your SIM list before contacting support.
Should I delete the eSIM and scan again?
No. Many codes cannot be reused after deletion. Ask support to verify the profile first.
Open the order linked to your QR code and keep its order number ready.
