Phones report eSIM problems with short, unhelpful messages that often describe the symptom rather than the cause. The same words can mean a blocked Wi-Fi network, an already-used code, or a locked handset.
Find the exact wording your phone showed below. Each entry gives the most likely cause first — that is the one to try before anything else.
One rule before you start: do not delete an eSIM profile while troubleshooting. Most profiles can only be installed once, so deleting turns a settings problem into a replacement request.
Check these three things first
A large share of install errors are one of these, whatever the message says. They take a minute and they resolve more cases than any device-specific step.
- Turn off any VPN or private-relay feature completely, then retry. A VPN is the single most common cause of a failed profile download.
- Get off captive-portal Wi-Fi. Hotel, airport and cafe networks that show a sign-in page frequently block the download server. Use home Wi-Fi or another phone's hotspot.
- Confirm the phone is carrier-unlocked. A locked handset can show almost any of the errors below, and no amount of retrying will change it.
iPhone: errors while adding the plan
- "Unable to Add Cellular Plan" — the generic iOS download failure. Almost always network-side: disable the VPN, switch Wi-Fi networks, and retry. If it repeats on a second network, the code may already be used.
- "Cellular Plan Cannot Be Added" — the carrier server rejected the request. Usually an already-installed or expired activation code; ask support to check whether the profile was issued.
- "This code is no longer valid" — the activation code has already been redeemed. eSIM codes are single-install; you need a reissued profile, not another attempt.
- "Invalid QR Code" — the camera read something that is not an activation code, or the image is too small or blurred. Open the code at full size, or tap Enter Details Manually and type the SM-DP+ address and activation code instead.
- "Unable to Complete Cellular Plan Change" — iOS could not finish writing the profile. Restart the iPhone and retry once before requesting a reissue.
- "No eSIM-capable device" or the Add eSIM option missing entirely — the handset does not support eSIM, or it is a mainland-China model, which ships without eSIM hardware.
Android: errors while adding the plan
Android wording varies by manufacturer and version — Samsung, Pixel and others phrase the same failure differently. Match on the closest text.
- "Couldn't add eSIM" / "Can't add eSIM" — the generic Android download failure. Same first three checks: VPN off, different Wi-Fi, confirm the phone is unlocked.
- "Download failed" or "Profile download failed" — the connection to the provisioning server dropped part-way. Retry once on a different network; repeated failures usually mean the code is spent.
- "Invalid activation code" — the SM-DP+ address or code was mistyped, or the code has already been used. Retype carefully: the code is case-sensitive and easily confused between 0/O and 1/l.
- "Can't connect to network. Try again later." — this is the download server, not your mobile signal. Change Wi-Fi network and retry.
- "eSIM not supported" — the model or that regional variant has no eSIM hardware, or the carrier firmware has it disabled.
Errors that mean the profile is already installed
These are worth separating out, because retrying makes them worse rather than better. An eSIM profile is issued once; once it has been downloaded onto any phone, the same code cannot install it again.
- "This code is no longer valid", "already been used", "already installed" — the profile is on a device somewhere. If it is on your current phone, look in your cellular or SIM settings before requesting anything new; it may simply need turning on.
- If you installed it and then reset or erased the phone, the profile is usually gone for good. Ask support for a reissue rather than reinstalling.
- If you are moving to a new phone, transfer the profile rather than reinstalling from the original code.
Errors after the eSIM is installed
These mean the profile downloaded correctly and the problem is connection or settings. The fixes are unrelated to the install errors above.
- "No Service" or "SOS" / "SOS only" — the line is not registered on a local network. Confirm you are inside the plan's coverage area, turn Data Roaming on for the travel line, then toggle airplane mode for 15 seconds.
- "Searching…" that never resolves — try manual network selection and pick a local operator, waiting about 30 seconds per attempt.
- "SIM Not Provisioned" / "SIM Not Provisioned MM#2" — the profile is installed but the plan is not yet live on the network. This is normal for a short time after first install; if it persists past an hour in the coverage area, contact support.
- "PDP Authentication Failure" — a specific APN or authentication fault with its own guide. Do not delete the profile; follow that article.
- Full bars but nothing loads — the phone can see a network but is not using the travel line for data. Set the eSIM as the mobile-data line, and on iPhone turn off Allow Cellular Data Switching.
- "Not registered on network" (Android) — same family as No Service. Check roaming is on for that line and the plan has not expired.
What to send support if none of it works
The team can usually resolve an install failure in one reply when the first message carries everything. Sending it all at once saves a day of back-and-forth while you are travelling.
- The exact error text, copied or photographed rather than described.
- Your order number, and the last four digits of the ICCID if the profile installed. Never send the full number, and never send a password.
- Phone model and OS version, and whether the phone is carrier-unlocked.
- The country and city you are in right now.
- Which steps above you already tried, so nobody asks you to repeat them.
Frequently asked questions
What does "Unable to Add Cellular Plan" mean on iPhone?
It is iOS's generic download failure and is usually a network problem, not a broken code. Turn off any VPN, move to a different Wi-Fi network that has no sign-in page, and retry. If it fails on a second network, the activation code may already have been used.
Why does my phone say the activation code is invalid?
Either it was mistyped — the code is case-sensitive, and 0/O and 1/l are easy to confuse — or it has already been redeemed. eSIM codes install once, so a used code cannot be reused on another phone.
What does "SIM Not Provisioned" mean?
The profile is installed but the network has not finished activating the line. It is normal briefly after a first install. If it lasts more than about an hour while you are inside the plan's coverage area, contact support.
Should I delete the eSIM and start again?
No, not unless support tells you to. Most eSIM profiles can only be downloaded once, so deleting a profile that only has a settings problem turns it into a replacement request.
Why do I see SOS instead of my normal signal?
SOS means the phone can only reach emergency services because it is not registered on a usable network. Check you are in the plan's coverage area, turn on Data Roaming for the travel line, and toggle airplane mode for 15 seconds.
