Ghana is one of the more straightforward West African countries to stay connected in. MTN's coverage is genuinely broad, the cities have solid 4G, and the main tourist circuit — Accra, Cape Coast, Kumasi — is well served throughout.
Ghana's mobile networks
MTN Ghana is dominant, with the widest national footprint and 4G nearly everywhere people go. It's the default for travel eSIMs and the right choice if you're heading north.
Telecel Ghana (formerly Vodafone Ghana) has good urban and southern coverage.
AT Ghana (formerly AirtelTigo) is the smaller third operator, mostly urban.
Most travel eSIMs route through MTN. For a trip that stays in the south, any of them works; for Mole or the Upper regions, MTN matters.
Coverage, region by region
Accra — Strong 4G citywide, with 5G appearing in parts of Airport Residential, East Legon, Osu and Cantonments. Congestion at peak hours is the main issue rather than coverage.
Kumasi — Comprehensive, including around the Manhyia Palace and the central market.
Cape Coast and Elmina — Good coverage in both towns and at the castles. The coastal road between them is fine.
Kakum National Park — Signal at the entrance and visitor centre, weaker on the canopy walkway and in the forest itself. Not a problem for a half-day visit.
Busua, Ada Foah and the beach towns — Generally covered, occasionally patchy at the more remote lodges.
Volta Region — Reasonable around Ho and Hohoe. Wli Falls and the hiking areas drop out. The Lake Volta ferry crossings lose signal mid-water.
Mole National Park — Coverage near the motel and main gate, very little on game drives or walking safaris. Download offline maps before the long drive up.
Tamale and the north — Decent in Tamale itself, thinner between towns. The road north to Bolgatanga has gaps.
Larabanga and Paga — Basic coverage in the settlements, unreliable outside.

Setting up before you fly
Install at home on Wi-Fi a day or two before departure. The profile downloads then; the plan generally starts counting when it connects to a Ghanaian network.

Practical tips for Ghana
- WhatsApp is the default channel for tour operators, drivers and guesthouses. Having data from the moment you land matters more here than in many countries.
- Mobile money is everywhere, but it needs a Ghanaian number, which no travel eSIM reliably gives you — our Ghana plans with calls and texts include a number, but it is assigned after purchase and may not be Ghanaian. Carry cash and a card.
- Download offline maps for the north. The drive to Mole is long and the last stretch has gaps.
