🇮🇹 About eSIMs in Italy
Italy has excellent 4G coverage across the country and expanding 5G in Rome, Milan, Florence and Naples. Italy's main networks are TIM, Vodafone, WindTre and iliad. Some current plans list iliad and WindTre, and a few add Vodafone, so check the plan details if you want a particular one. Expect strong signal along the Rome–Florence–Venice high-speed rail corridor and in most hill towns.
Travelers here lean on Google Maps for the labyrinthine centro storicos, WhatsApp for agriturismo hosts, and Trenitalia's app for train tickets. 10–12 GB covers a week comfortably; two-week travelers with Tuscany driving or a Sicily leg usually want 15–20 GB. If your itinerary also touches France, Switzerland or Croatia, a Europe regional plan is often the better value.
Airport SIMs at FCO and MXP work fine but are marked up. Set up the eSIM on Wi-Fi according to your plan's start rule and skip the kiosk.
When comparing Italy eSIM plans, Switzerland is the border that catches people out. It sits outside the EU, so an Italy-only plan will not work on a day trip to Lugano, Zermatt or the Bernina Express; choose a regional plan that lists Switzerland as well as Italy. In Rome and Florence, expect to lean on maps, transport and museum-ticket apps; save tickets offline before you queue, as signal inside thick-walled churches and museums can be weak. Unlimited plans usually slow after a daily high-speed allowance, so for most trips a fixed plan sized to your own use is better value. See our Italy eSIM guide and Switzerland eSIM guide.
How to activate your eSIM in Italy
- 1Time the installationCheck the selected plan's start rule. If it starts on its first network connection and allows installation before travel, install it over reliable Wi-Fi before you fly; if it starts at installation, install it when you need it.
- 2Enable in Rome or MilanAt FCO, MXP or VCE, switch data to the Italy eSIM and enable Data Roaming.
- 3Grab Trenitalia and ItaloTrenoBoth are essential apps for high-speed rail tickets and real-time platforms.
- 4Save Amalfi and Cinque Terre offlineBoth regions have great coverage in towns but signal thins on the coastal switchbacks and hiking trails.
Italy eSIM FAQ
Which Italian network does it use?
It depends on the plan. Some current Italy plans list iliad and WindTre, and a few add Vodafone. The plan details show the network where one is named, so check them before you buy if it matters to you.
Will it work on the Frecciarossa?
Yes, coverage runs the length of the Rome–Milan and Rome–Naples high-speed corridors.
Does it work in Cinque Terre?
Yes in each of the five villages. Trail signal between them drops briefly on the higher paths.
Should I choose Italy-only or Europe?
For a pure Italy trip, single-country. If you also visit France, Switzerland, Slovenia or Croatia, Europe regional is better.
How much data for 2 weeks in Italy?
15–20 GB. Add unlimited if you plan constant Google Maps driving through Tuscany or the Dolomites.
Does an Italy eSIM work in Switzerland?
Not an Italy-only plan. Switzerland is outside the EU and is covered only by plans that list it, so for a trip to both choose a regional plan that includes Italy and Switzerland.
Is an unlimited eSIM worth it in Italy?
For most visitors, no. 10 to 12 GB covers a week of maps, messaging and train apps. Choose unlimited only for heavy streaming or hotspot use, after checking its daily high-speed allowance.
